Ha! As another old fogey, I subscribe to the "Independence to
Emergency" theory. I also believe these untestable statements:

1. The Golden Age ended with Ham Kisise Kam Nahin.
2. The Stone Age began a few years later with Qurbani.

And in a sadly comic turn of events, it was "HKKN" that ended up
providing the main material for the stone age ... And even as late
as now, many a "Bollywood hit" sounds like a gruesome paste-up of
butchered R D Burman ideas.

The Bollywood menace (was Re: Looking for an old recording...)

Author: Tushar Samant

The basic points made by Naniwadekar are indisputable, especially
the one about degraded public taste. I am of course one of the Indians
to whom the "best music of Lata" is not known--so utterly not known
that I have to put quotes around it--but at least I was brought up
on the Barsaat/Naagin/Mughal-e-Azam type of diet (not to mention the
overwhelmingly Mangeshkar-dominated musical culture of middle class
Maharashtra). So for better or worse, I will never think of e.g.
"tumhii mere mandir" as a great song. With that preface ...

One should be aware that this "cheap public taste" in Hindi film
music has lately assumed a particularly offensive international form.
It is associated with the name "Bollywood" (a joke that was meant...

Yes, Hindi Film Music is doing well these days = money-wise, but not
melody-wise.

Ah, the age old "old versus new" "songs in my time were better than
now" debate ;-)

Guillermo Ji ("Ji" is a term used to convey respect in Hindi, just
like "san", the courtesy title in Japanese), my humble request is not
to get caught in this pointless debate, listen to all the songs, as
many of them as possible, regardless of song's age, through which you
will develop your own personal taste. There are no "representative"
songs you can pick up for each year/decade too, there simply cannot be
any "representative" songs. Treat each song on its own merit (decided
by you alone) !

  My writings on Hindi Films

Author: Surjit Singh
Date: Apr 30, 2007 21:20

Hi RMIMers:

About 10 years ago, I wrote some stuff on RMIM, e.g. A Year in Hindi
Films. I have decided that I have enough material now to vastly expand
that series, thanks to lots of friends who generously obtained songs and
videos for me and my bookseller in Delhi who can find any book anywhere
on Earth for me!

I will write more as soon as I have some time. In the meantime, I have
gathered the first 10 articles here:

http://films.hindi-movies-songs.com/index.html

Please click on the new entry in the table. Soon I will add the articles
from 1941 to 1949.
