1.T.R. Mahalingam(Mali as he was popularly known) was born on

16/11/1926;died on 31/05/1986.

2. As a flautist, he was a Legend during his lifetime, and continues
to be "The

God of Celestial Flute",whose playing was the epitome of all divine
music,as

embodied by Lord Krishna himself. There never was and,it is highly
improbable

that there ever will be another flautist to equal him in sheer

brilliance,virtuosity,creativity and evocative genius,capable of
transporting

listeners to an out of the world experience, when he was in his
element.

3.My own association with The Legend dates back to my early childhood
days in 1947 in Lakshmipuram,Chennai, when our family landed as
refugees of
Partition from Karachi, where I was born in 1939.My father left my
mother and
my four siblings with my maternal grandmother's family in chennai and
went in
search of livelihood to Bombay.

4.My uncle Venkatraman was at that time a disciple of Mali along with
N.Ramani, his friend and colleague.Whereas,N.Ramani, later on became
the torch-bearer of Mali's school of innovative flute and went on to
become
Dr.Ramani, my uncle Venkatraman did not make a career of
flute. However, Mali was not only his Guru, but also his close friend
and mentor

and used to visit our home at Lakshmipuram frequently and used to
spend

hours, discussing carnatic music, sports and various other topics.Mali
was a
very interesting conversationalist, and, though not formally educated,
was
brilliant in English language and could talk authoritatively on any
subject in
addition to music.Another little known fact about Mali was that he was
a great
Carrom champion and frequently used to play carrom at our home.He was
a
master of many brilliant double strike ideas in carrom, where he used
to pocket
coins from almost impossible looking situations. He used to beat all
of us
hollow at the game, often starting the first strike and going on to
finish the
game at one go, without allowing his opponents any chance to
strike,such was

his mastery at the game!.

5.Mali's mastery at Carrom was only a reflection of his inborn
genius, capable of quickly grasping anything he chose to concentrate
on.The

apex of his genius talent was his celestial flute playing.

6.Mali never had formal training in music. His mother taught him the
rudiments of carnatic music, and he took a liking to flute playing in
his
childhood, when he heard great flute vidwans of those days,Palladam
Sanjiva

Rao and his Guru,Saraba Shastry. He started playing on his own and
became

very proficient. His parents wanted him to be trained by Palladam
Sanjiva
Rao and took him to his home. But when Sanjiva Rao asked Mali to play,
and
heard his celestial notes,he told him:
"I have nothing to teach you.You are a born genius.Go back and just
practise intensely, hear all great masters of music, and use your own
imagination, and you will become the greatest flautist of all time!"

7.Sanjiva Rao's words proved to be prophetic and soon Mali rose to be
the darling of all rasikas, who thronged his concerts to be enthralled
and
held captive by his sheer genius.

8.Being the eccentric genius that he was, he often used to play truant
at a number of concerts, chosing to ditch his numerous exasperated
fans, eagerly waiting for him to arrive at the sabha and perform, only
to be

return home with sore disappointment. When a close friend and disciple
of Mali

asked him why he ditched his fans at various concerts,Mali,in his
typical

nonchalant style replied:
"For me every music concert is an act of giving birth to my
creativity.I suffer labour pains and birth pangs on every concert
day.I set very

high personal standards to myself. On the days, when my creativity runs
dry,I

am afraid of not being able to meet the high personal standards I set
for myself,

and thus, I would rather chose to play truant at those concerts, than
perform

with mediocrity,bereft of creativity"

This showed that Mali was a true perfectionist at his craft, and was
grossly misunderstood by many of his critics, who tarred him with the
brush of
supreme arrogance and egotism, little realising that he really
worshipped

music in all it's divinity and chose not to compromise on absolutely
supreme

standards he set himself.
9. On the days when his creativity was at it's zenith,he used to play
celestial music, often plucking unheard of and impossible
notes,seemingly out

of thin air, sending his audience into rapturous delights and
transporting them
to an emotionally charged musical bliss, never heard before.
Here I must recall my nostalgic memories of a divine concert that Mali
gave at my eldest uncle, the Late Ramasubramaniam's marriage
reception,way

back in the 1950's.He played a scintillating Bhairavi and sent all of
us into
divine raptures.

Many years later, my uncle Venkataraman, complemented Mali for playing
a memorable Bhairavi at yet another concert. However,my
uncle,inadvertently
used the words:

"Mali sir, neenga en anna kalyanathil vasicha adhey Bhairaviyai,
innikkku marubadiyum ketten.Romba magizhchi"( "Mali Sir,I am delighted
to

hear the same Bhairavi that you played at my elder brother's
marriage")

Mali stared at him with a disdainful look and said,
"Adhey Bhairaviya?"("Is it the same Bhairavi?),implying that his
creativity was such that no two bhairavis he played could be the
same,being

the genius he was, and that he was capable of rendering the same raga
with

two entirely different range of creative ideas in two different
concerts.

10.It is 22 years since the eccentric genius and legend passed
away, but his immortal and trail-blazing music will continue to
transport for

ever countless music rasikas to a celestial world of divine bliss .
____________________________________________________________________________
Now it's time for us to enter the enthralling world of the great
Legend,Mali,and

soak our souls with the strains of his divine flute. Here is a
wonderful concert

held in 1956.
T.R.

Born on 27th August, 1928 in Rajamundry, Andhra Pradesh,Voleti
Venkateswaralu's unique and imaginative style of music, which, though
steeped in the traditional classicim of carnatic music, also
incorporated those better elements of the hindustani sytem like voice
culture, sruthi suddham, elaborate raga alapanas with slow and
methodical development from the manthara sthayee notes, leading onto
the madhyama kala vistharam enriched with flourishes of soulful
sangathis,and concluding in the breath-taking thara-sthayee sancharams
in the higher octaves, before again a magnificent descent down the
stairs of the lower two octaves, culminating finally in the thara-
sthayee notes. His raga alapanas left the listeners with the deep sense
of soul-fulfilment.

He was the prime disciple of the noted Andhra musician,Dr. Sri Pada
Pinakapani garu, who, ungrudgingly hailed him as a musical genius who
had surpassed his own talent.
In Dr.Pinakapani's own words:
"He was a disciple of mine all right, but what a genius! You can
describe him as one of the best musicians of Andhra ever. I wonder
whether we will ever get another musician like that"

G.N.S . Raghavan,another renowned music critic and
musicologist, comparing both the Guru,Dr.Pinakapani, and his illustrious
disciple,Voleti, summed it up in beautiful words:
"It is a curious fact that Voleti was more widely popular than his
teacher. Perhaps it is because Pinakapani's music is like the sun
whose intense brightness dazzles and scorches, while Voleti, like the
moon, sheds a balmy effulgence". Raghavan remarked, "Voleti was like
the 'utsava vigraha (Utsavar)' of a temple-- the deity with burnished
golden exterior, adorned with silk and jewels when taken in
procession-- while Pinakapani is like the 'moola vigraha ( moolavar)'
in the sanctum-- sculpted in black stone: dark, mysterious and
awesome".

Voleti's unique and highly imaginative style,a combination of the best
of both carnatic and hindustani systems with, manodharmic raga
elaborations and a flair and felicity in his kalpana swaras, was the
result of intense and rigorous practice in his earlier years of
training. His style with strong shades of Hindustani system, pleased
even great hindustani maestros like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan,Mehdi
Hasan,and Ghulam Ali.

His unique style with a fruity, velvety voice, made him a very popular
musician all over the country, and he was held in high esteem by
leading violin maestros Lalgudi Jayaraman and M.S.Goplakrishnan,and
also by percussionists Vellore Ramabhadran and Guruvayur Dorai, all of
whom were pleased to accompany him in many concerts, and they formed a
perfectly synchronised and harmonious team .

Voleti was a very modest and humble man,not running after titles and
awards, which, though, came to him without asking -the Sangeetha Nataka
academy award, Sangeetha Choodamani, and Sur Singar among others.

Music to Voleti was not a mere profession, but the core of his
existence and passion, not a means to an end,but a divinity that
throbbed within him, waiting to give expression with full-fledged
manodharma in all his public concerts, winning accolades both from the
cognoscenti of music as well as the lay listener. He passed away in
1989 at the age of 61,and not only during his lifetime, but also
decades after his passing today, is still regarded as one of the
musical jewels gifted by Andhrapradesh who became the pride and glory
of carnatic music all over India.

_________________________________________________________
Voleti Concert upload:
Venue:Shanmukhananda,Bombay
Year:1987
Accompaniments: But he
rejected this advice, and continued to give concerts till his demise
on April 27, 1984.

He was a great devotee of Lord Rama, and was very well versed in all
aspects of Hindu religion, spirituality, mythology, various temples
and their traditions and the relationship of great saint singers to
these temples, as reflected in their compositions. His greatest regret
was that in the final few months of his life, he was not in a physical
condition to sing even a few krithis on Lord Rama on special occasions
like Bakula Panchami and Ram Navami.

MDR was a scholar in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Sanskrit and English.
He composed over 300 krithis and musical operas like "Varada Bhakta
Vijayam", "Sundara Ramayanam" and a Kalakshetra musical ballet "Buddha
Avatharam".

He led a highly principled life, refusing to run after awards and
titles, though some of them, came to him naturally for his
contribution to preserving our musical traditions. His only mission in
life was to propogate his guru Tiger's musical traditions to future
generations and in this, by all standards, he succeeded immensely.

__________________________________________________________________
Now let us transport ourselves into the divine world of MDR's awesome
music with one of the choice concerts from my collection:

01_MDR_SRI_MAHAGANAPATIM_GOWLA_DIKSHITAR.mp3

http://rapidshare.com/files/146852850/01_MDR_SRI_MAHAGANAPATIM_GOWLA_...

02_MDR_SRI_BALASUBRAMANYAYA_BILAHARI_DIKSHITAR.mp3

http://rapidshare.com/files/146852851/02_MDR_SRI_BALASUBRAMANYAYA_BIL...

03_MDR_SHAYAMASUNDARA_DHANYASI_THYAGARAJA.mp3

http://rapidshare.com/files/146852852/03_MDR_SHAYAMASUNDARA_DHANYASI_...

04_MDR_KANMANIYE_SOLLADI_KAPI.mp3

http://rapidshare.com/files/146852853/04_MDR_KANMANIYE_SOLLADI_KAPI.mp3

05_MDR_SMARANE_SUKHAM_JANARANJANI_THYAGARAJA.mp3

http://rapidshare.com/files/146852854/05_MDR_SMARANE_SUKHAM_JANARANJA...

06_MDR_KALIGIYUNTE_KEERAVANI_THYAGARAJA.mp3

http://rapidshare.com/files/146852856/06_MDR_KALIGIYUNTE_KEERAVANI_TH...

07_MDR_KADHAL_ENRA_RAGAMALIKA.mp3

http://rapidshare.com/files/146852857/07_MDR_KADHAL_ENRA_RAGAMALIKA.mp3

08_MDR_THILLANA_PURVIKALYANI.mp3

http://rapidshare.com/files/146852858/08_MDR_THILLANA_PURVIKALYANI.mp3

What can one say about the Immortal MSS Amma, that has not already
been said by thousands of people from all walks of life, both the
great national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, as
well as by common rasikas who have been captivated by various aspects
of her music?
It is said that when Gandhiji heard her sing the Narsi Mehtha bhajan,
"Vaishnava janato tene kahiye",( the truly religious are those who
have great compassion for the sufferings of the poor), tears welled in
his eyes and he was choked with emotion. And on another occasion, when
Gandhiji wanted MSS to sing the meera bhajan, "Hari Tum Haro", her
husband, the Late Sri Sadasivam, replied that she was not aware of
how to sing this bhajan, since she had not learnt it.Gandhiji replied
that it was enough for him to hear MSS speak the words of the bhajan,
even if she did not know the song. This was indeed a great tribute from
the Father of the Nation to the intense bhava, bhakti and emotional
spiritualism in her voice. This incident happened in 1948, and later on
MSS went on to master this bhajan and made it nationally and
internationally famous with her soulful rendition.
It was also a tribute paid by Jawaharlal Nehru, "I am but a mere Prime
Minister, who pales into insignificance in the presence of the Queen
of Music and Nightingale of India".
What distinguished her music from numerous other vidwans?
Her perfect Sruthi alignment, complete mastery over laya, creativity
which combined classical tradition with a high level of innovation,
her core of bhakti and bhava-- these were the hallmarks of her
music. She had the capacity to both enthrall the hardened music experts
and critics, as well as be able to reach out to city commoners and
even villagers.
And talk about the great philanthropist that she was!. She gave
unstintingly to various social causes like the Kasturba Gandhi
Memorial Trust, Ramkrishna Math, Sankar Netralaya, Subramanya Bharathi
Trust etc.She earned crores of rupees through her public concerts, but
had the golden heart to give it all away to charity and social
causes.Even the royalties from her recorded albums went to
charities. There can never be another parallel to this kind of
munificence in the music world.Of course, she was guided and inspired
in this philanthropy by her husband, Kalki Sadasivam, who was totally
instrumental in shaping her post-marriage musical career and was
himself a great freedom fighter and philanthropist.
Awards and titles came to her without soliciting them, and culminated
in her being awarded the Bharat Ratna by the then President,
K.R.Narayanan, who personally phoned her to convey the bestowing of
the highest honour of the nation on her.She was overcome with emotion
on hearing the news, and replied that she was sad that her Late
husband was not alive to share the joy of the award, and she accepted
the honour in all humility. And this humility was what characterised
her personality more than anything else. She was exemplary in her
modesty and humility inspite of her unparalleled achievements.

Her passing away in Dec.2004 has left a void in the CM world which can
never be filled by others. But the immortal music treasure she has left
behind for posterity will make music lovers exclaim even after 1000
years, that such a great soul did walk the face of this planet and
left her remarkeable imprints on the sands of time.
___________________________________________________________________________
And let us immerse ourselves in a spiritual
