Heard Ajoy Chakraborty presenting "Sangeet Sarita" on Vividh Bharti
this morning. He is running a series where he is supposed to be
presenting different facets of Bade Ghulam Ali's repertoire. Today, he
introduced the BGAK recording saying (not verbatim), "This is the raga
Bhoopali, which not sung by too many singers. BGAK was one of of the
few who sang it." He then presented snatches of vilambit and drut
recordings by BGAK.
AFAIK, Bhoopali is the same as Bhoop - isn't it? If yes, where does
Ajoy C get off saying it is not sung by too many people? If not, what
is the difference? To my (completely untutored) ears, the recording he
played sounded like Bhoop alright.
Interesting sidelight: the interviewer was Kabban Mirza (of "Razia
Sultan" fame). This series was apparently recorded in 1995. Any idea
what he does today? Does he sing at all?
Warm regards,
Abhay
