Why is it rare for a woman to be into Dylan?

I was curious about the comment today on rmd about how rare it is for
a woman to be really into Dylan, and am wondering what others think. I
actually wrote a letter to Isis years ago and mentioned that same
thing. When I go to Dylan concerts or go somewhere with my husband in
my car (that has a license plate saying Bob is the Shakespeare of our
time, plus a couple of Bob bumper stickers), everyone immediately
talks to my husband about Bob, and he justs points to me...what is
that all about? It annoys me!

I don't understand it either, Kerry. But when I go to concerts the
ratio is staggering. So many more guys.

I'd guess it's because men seem to be more actively into it - buying
albums, booking tickets etc - on the whole. Most of our friends are
couples with children, and it's mostly the men who make time for...

This seems so weird to me since I've always been the alpha music
purchaser in our house. And thank goodness the old man is into
Dylan, scratchy blues and harmonicas or I don't think the marriage
would've lasted!

I've never known women to be fans of him especially. Well, fans of
HIM, yes...fans of his music, not so much. A lot of it is heady, self-
pitying, self-absorbed, whiny and sarcastic. (That's not meant in a
bad way.) But it can be hard to listen to 14 verses of that kind of
song when it doesn't even have a bridge.

What I've noticed in the last few years is how many young girls (teens
and twentysomethings) DO seem to be in attendance.

There are plenty of women at the shows I've been to... When I was a
teenager two of my best friends who were females were heavily into
Dylan, and it was through them that I heard the albums that I didn't
have yet... These women had a soft spot for Bob and seemed to see the
human foible side of him that was worth forgiving and could identify
the tender points of even his most abrasive side... At least that's
how it seemed; we never really talked about it...

But it's probably the men who tend to horde the physical music data
and do the extra research to find out what is behind it all, the
deconstruction of the construct...

I have actually overheard people at various times say "Let's go see Dylan before he dies, he's like...

It could also be that Bob was never seen as the classic sort of sex
symbol that people like Elvis or even the cuddly Beatles were from the
outset... Thus, Dylan would be thought to have attracted less...
