George Antheil's Ballet Mécanique Package
[Thanks to Sarah for these. I saw a fifteen minute excerpt played
automatically by multiple instruments at an exhibit on Dada at the
National Gallery. Mostly a lot of racket, I thought, but then again a
major thrust behind Dada was a revolt against "reason," the alleged
cause of trench warfare in the Great War. I also saw the film there,
separately from the music, but there pretty obviously was no real
connection between the two. The film was a jumble of images. What was
offbeat, and a principled rejection of reason, back then has become
mainstream, and an unprincipled, casual rejection of reason, on MTV!
