I've heard that Britten was contemptuous of Brahms's music. Can anyone
elaborate on this for me? TIA

I think you should give digital another chance. Your indictment of one piece
of equipment should not indict the technology. I would guess that, at this
time, the majority of users accept digital as superior to any analog medium.
There is a tape sound, and some people consider it desirable for certain
purposes, but I leave it to the group as to whether it can be approximated
by choice of microphones because I know very little about microphones.

The cost of tape is so very high! I could sell you an 8-track machine, I
saved it from my 66 Volkswagon. In addition to the consumables, you would
be creating a maintenance position, I'd like to apply...

Might be "My Little Girl" by Daniel Johnston. If I'm right, you can
thank Shazam for the help. Good Luck,

  "Christmas with José Van Dam"

Author: EvelynVogtGamble(Divamanque)
Date: Dec 25, 2008 09:40

I am enjoying a lasting Christmas treat I received (from M. van Dam
himself) just after Christmas, 2006. Although it appears to be have
been issued by Sony, I have tried in vain to locate it as a gift for
fellow fans, which makes me wonder whether it was ever intended for
commercial release. It was recorded with the Flemish Radio Orchestra,
Dirk Brossé conducting. Much of it is in English, although some of the
carols are in French, German, Spanish, Italian and Flemish. This is not
an "operatic" performance - some of the assisting "soloists" sound like
gifted amateurs, and van Dam himself sounds as though he were doing a
relaxed "semi-pop" performance for friends.

It arrived with a handwritten personal note (presumably written by van
Dam himself) and is a highly treasured possession, because he troubled
to remember a devoted fan. I know everyone is permanently annoyed with
Charlie's "name dropping" and I would never presume to claim friendship
with an artist on the basis of a casual gift. However, it is comforting
to realize how kind and thoughtful the singer is as a human being.

  M&V: Handel concertos

'The [third] disc finishes with a beautifully poised account of
Handel's Sonata a 5 with the solo violin played by Pavlo Beznosiuk.
This work dates from 1707, when Handel was in Rome. It is a
masterpiece which deserves to be better known, especially in a
performance as good as this.'

- Robert Hugill writes about harmonia mundi's recent 4 CD set of
Handel concertos in today's Music & Vision.

Season's greetings!
