Today's 'Building a Library' on BBC Radio 3's 'CD Review' chose the
Richard Hickox / LSO Chandos CD of VW6 as top choice from the
available recordings in the UK ... so no mention of Slatkin, Berglund,
Abravanel, etc., which are (presumably) no longer officially to be
found in the UK CD catalogs.

It's quite some time since I saw any RVW discs conducted by Berglund/
Abravanel in the UK, so this would appear to be the case. I've heard
the Hickox disc and it's a good choice. Personally, I would have
chosen Boult or Handley. Even Haitink.

The Slatkin cycle was on RCA Red Seal (at least my copies); I don't
imagine there's much chance of ever seeing them again on either side
of The Pond...

I think it might have been more interesting and even more commercial
if he'd recorded them with the St Louis Symphony (he was still there
at the time) rather than the Philharmonia, as it would have been the
first non-British-orchestra VW cycle ever recorded.

I listened to part of that show but I don't know if he got around to
listening to the Bryden Thomson version, which like the Hickox is on
Hyperion. I listened to snippets of both yesterday and the Thomson
version sounded more interesting to my ears, though the Hickox version
is certainly excellent.
Both of these versions are available on emusic. The problem with Boult
is that his better recordings are only in mono.

Sorry I meant to say that they're both on Chandos.

Never heard one with the BSO, but Barbirolli’s version with the
Bavarian Radio Symphony on Orfeo may be my favorite.

Do you guys really like VW's symphonies? I listened to the programme
and found the music pretty deadly dull - that kind of "gravitas"
that's more mood than substance.
There are bits of VW that seem to me much more fun - the Tallis
Fantasia, the Wasps overture.......... Why the desire for monumental
symphonies that seemed to obsess more than one composer?
