Abbado's is a very fine one.
As with a lot of works: there are many good recordings, and there's no "best".
Except for the last one I've heard. In this case: Nagano.
And Boulez, Cluytens, Dutoit. Or Hickox.

Who's conducting the Acad. of St. Martin-in-the-Fields? Marriner?

Why don't you look in the RCA cupboard. I think there's an outstanding
reading by the Chicago Symphony Orchestr under Jean Martinon. It may
have appeared in the High Performance series. Certainly the Japanese
have reissued it. Flawless wind playing.

I agree. Except the recording doesn't exist. Nice recommendation.

RCA does have Mata's excellent recording. Flawless wind playing.
Highly recommended.

Also Jeremy could find Ormandy's recording in the company cupboard.
Not quite the best, but some fine playing anyway. Better still is the
classic Boulez/NYP issued on Columbia.

I doubt that this has made it to CD (unfortunately), but the Chamber
Symphony of Philadelphia, conducted by Brusilow, recorded this work in
the late '60's for RCA. The first movement was done in a single take
and the spectacular oboe playing is by the late James Caldwell. I've
also had a soft spot for the early RCA recording with Reiner/NBC
Symphony (not on CD either, alas).

On that Reiner NBC recording, Bloom subbed for Renzi on Oboe

The Chicago "Tombeau" recording is with Solti. I'm no sure if it has been
released on CD, but I have the LP: LDR 10040

The other piece on this LP is the Mussorgsky/Ravel "Pictures"
Great playing!

Another favourite is the Wolff/ St. Paul Chamber Orchestra CD. It has been
re-released in 2 cd set that includes other selections by Ravel.

And if you can find it, the Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia recorded it in
the 60s for RCA, conducted by Anshel Brusilow. The performance is superb,
but I don't know if it has been released on CD.

Why don't you look in the RCA cupboard. I think there's an outstanding
