addendum to Peter Serkin's 1973 Max Wilcox/Peter Serkin-superbly-
produced RCA Messiaen Vingt Regards, one of the great LP recordings,
finally superbly transferred to CD a few years ago..
I heard tonight in Portland, Oregon, at Reed College, Peter Serkin
with the original members of Tashi perform Messiaen's Quatuor Pour La
Fin Du Temps, an unforgettable experience, putting all recordings to
shame... historical and revelatory.... anyone else?

I always liked the LP version by I Solisti Veneti on RCA, but I've never
seen a CD transfer of it. Presently I have the Ensemble Amati/Analekta CD,
and am very happy with it.

Well, surely you agree that Paul is mistreated in
the debates. Fox excluded him from a forum in NH
while allowing Thompson in. Paul led the candidates
in fund-raising at the time and had a fair base of support
in the polls.
Or maybe you think Fox Noise is "fair and balanced"?

Thanks for the tip. Is there an alternative coupling
available somewhere, I wonder?

Ah, you don't share Brahms's high opinion of the Verdi Requiem then:
I'm not sure I can forgive you for that! Brahms made a spirited
defense of the Verdi Requiem after Hans von Bülow attacked its
operatic theatricality. (What kind of music do you Germans expect the
Italians to write?) If the Requiem is too much for you, you should
listen to the Quattro pezzi sacri and especially the Te Deum.

That strikes me as a more than just opinion. Not only is it uneven,
but the forms in Mefistofele are very tiny. The arias in Mozart and
Verdi are Wagnerian in scope compared to those in Mefistofele, which
doesn't mean I don't love them. Time and again Boito relies on
strophic forms to fill out the space of an aria. Both of Margherita's
arias consist of two strophes, and they're still short. The "Lontano"
duet lasts about three minutes. Only in the Prologue is there any
real evidence that Boito could cope with more expansive forms.
