I guess it's just a natural extension of all the guitarist/bassist/
drummer jokes.

More than once, I have heard people say that the Beach Boys (=Brian Wilson)
could be put up against the Beatles as the best rock band of all time. Never
quite understood that claim, although as I said, I've heard it more than
once from independent quarters. Musically speaking, I can see their point a
bit more - lyrically speaking, it's hard to imagine comparing "Surfin' USA"
with "Yesterday" ;-)

Here's why all those '60's groups produced so much great music. They
grew up in the '40's and '50's and listened, and absorbed by osmosis,
a great deal of classical music and the high end of popular music -
Gershwin, Kern, etc.
Especially true of the Brits as classical music was most of what they
heard on the BBC.
This is not my "theory". There are various interviews with the
Beatles (see the intro to Mark Lewisohn's "The Beatles Recording
Sessions") and others about this.

I like Alex Ross' writing, thanks for the reminder to buy his book!

Thanks guys for the addition to the RMCG book list. Looks like another
good one.

BTW, I am halfway through the Levitin book. Thanks for the
recommendation.
I am also down to my final two of the "Maigret" detective series by
Georges Simenon. 84 books! He's the master of the genre. And one
actually has a suspect that plays the guitar.

To be honest, it had already gone through the RMCG list once before, and
rather recently (although after I started reading it). I remember they were
lamenting the fact that there wasn't much on guitar composers, just a little
bit on Villa-Lobos (that's true, although since he mentions Britten and
Berio you could probably make a case that there's a little more than that).

In rock the Beatles aren't going to be topped quality wise in my op.
Capitol-era Sinatra is pretty amazing.
