I hear many call spruce, the traditional wood for flamenco
soundbaords. So, then we would have to call spruce the traditional
wood for classical soundboards.
Going back to the 1960s. I remember going to the El Poche restaurant
many times and watching Mario Escudero playing a machine head Ramirez
flamenco with a cedar top. I remember Sabicas playing a Ramirez cedar
top, Juan Serrano and many many others. IMO, cedar has always made a
better flamenco than spruce. I had always felt spruce had all edge to
the sound and when cedar came along, in the 1960s, it offered a more
center and thicker sound and more volume. Naturally, these are
opinions. Yet, I have played many spruce classical and flamencos I
have loved. But, I don't feel it fair to call spruce traditional. I
