  Feldman - Words and Music

Author: ben.belinsky
Date: Dec 26, 2008 06:43

Here's Feldman's Words and Music - a radio play with words by Samuel
Beckett. Played here by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. It
was recorded in May 2002 from BBC Radio 3. There's more details of the
performers in the intro.

You can download it as two files from Rapidshare by clicking these
links then you join it together with something like hsplit, then unzip
it with something like winzip then you should have 3 flac files which
if you wish you can convert to wav files. Quite a business but I'm
sure you'll find it's worth it.

I'd agree with the performers I heard on the radio some time ago, who
laughed as they described how the music barely changed between the happy
and the sad bits. I guess there's only so much emotion you can convey
with arpeggios.

I don't care about operas but his music is nice and easy.

No, but I think you should spell the great physicist's name correctly.

Looking at the blurb on the Manchester site, it implies it might be
staged. I'll write to them and try and find out more.

  Lost Highway opera?

Has the board heard this piece? The recording is supposed to be some
revolutionary encoding that captures the various levels and layers of
sound, which are a combination of live chamber orchestra, live sound
manipulation of vocals and solo instruments and some advanced
electronic textures. I can't say I fully understand the work from the
two times I've listened to it, but there's plenty to dig into beyond
the "flashy" use of electronics and sound manipulation. Certainly
these are attention grabbing, but the combination of these and the
live writing and vocals seem to be extremely well thought. Of course,
there are significant film projections that make up a large part of
the opera's impact, and it's not joining the Met's repertoire anytime
soon, so live performance is definitely the most complete...
