I'd agree with the performers I heard on the radio some time ago, who
laughed as they described how the music barely changed between the happy
and the sad bits. I guess there's only so much emotion you can convey
with arpeggios.

Has the board heard this piece? The recording is supposed to be some
revolutionary encoding that captures the various levels and layers of
sound, which are a combination of live chamber orchestra, live sound
manipulation of vocals and solo instruments and some advanced
electronic textures. I can't say I fully understand the work from the
two times I've listened to it, but there's plenty to dig into beyond
the "flashy" use of electronics and sound manipulation. Certainly
these are attention grabbing, but the combination of these and the
live writing and vocals seem to be extremely well thought. Of course,
there are significant film projections that make up a large part of
the opera's impact, and it's not joining the Met's repertoire anytime
soon, so live performance is definitely the most complete...
