the concept is as simple as this: you ride where you look, thus, the
thing you're watching in order to avoid is the thing you're going to
hit
sort of
it sounds like a good argument for not letting go of the totality-view
that makes riding defensively much easier and safer (or to put it
another way, makes defensive driving possible)
as a concept, it draws strength from parallel phenomena in other
activities, such as flying (arguably more like riding than driving)
here's a question though: is there any way to break that urge to watch
the thing that's demanding your attention?
or to paraphrase george carlin: there are two guys in a bar, one
sitting there minding his own business and the other pounding a
machete on the bar screaming "the next motherfucker who comes in here
is getting his head chopped off" ... who ya gonna watch?
defying human nature in order to stay a human (and not be a
splotch) ... sounds ironic
