In the shop where they're fixing my Vespacar there's a mid-90's
Vulcan 1500, somewhat rusty and run-down looking. It has a broken
gear shifter. The owner lives up the coast and uses it year round,
rain or shine.
To fix it the shop is going to have to tear the whole motor apart
and crack the crankcase. Their shop labor rate is $100/hour.
The wrench didn't mention a figure, but said it would take a lot
of hours. If it takes anywhere near 30, the owner would be better off
spending his money on this:

After that he could even recover some more by parting out his
old bike.

Well, with all the talk of accidents, I thought I'd throw my two cents in
...
Part of sensible motorcycling is recognizing the limitations of car drivers
and not forcing errors.
For example, a motorcycle is less visible than a car, and the speed is
harder to judge. This automatically implies that a motorcyclist should
generally follow the speed limits. Exceeding the speed limits gives drivers
of cars less opportunity to spot a motorcycle.
Similarly, some motorcycles can accelerate very quickly. From a car
driver's perspective, the darned thing comes out of nowhere. It seems
sensible that motorcyclists should avoid accelerating rapidly when mixing
with cars.
I was going about 60 mph on a 55-mph two-laner the other day and a sportbike
came whizzing around me going at least 80, but probably faster. It was so
noisy it startled me through my earplugs. If that guy had crashed, I'd say
he brought it on himself.
And then there is weaving in and out of traffic and riding aggressively.
Some of the motocrazies bring it on themselves ...
But most don't ...

First let me say that, although I rarely post here, I have probably learned
as much from the regular posters here as I did in the MSF class I took a few
years ago. It hasn't always of a positive nature, but learning, nonetheless.
So, I have a quick question for all of you 20-30-40 year riders. What kind
of mileage SHOULD I expect out of a set of Bridgestone Exedras? I ride a
Vulcann 1600. Mixed riding - some highway, some not. Probably about 75%%
straight up and down - I won't wear them out from the sides, that's for
sure.
I have just over 5K on them now. I see BridgeSTONES beat up a bit on this
forum so what's the concensus on replacements?
Thanks for your help.

"Of course when a naked lady walks by, it's hard to see anybody
else... except where's the cop?" Wallace Baine said.
That question of course is answered by the photograph sent to the
Sentinel by a reader showing a police officer on a bicycle riding
past the woman as if she were, well, clothed.
According to the California Penal Code, indecent exposure
is a misdemeanor, but according to case law simply walking
down the street naked doesn't meet the elements of the penal code.
"We can't arrest that person right there. that is not against the law
But Santa Cruz police spokesman Zach Friend said "If we gave a
citation for every one of Santa Cruz's idiosyncrasies, we'd be
swimming in an ocean of citations."
....
the second photo is after the policeman on the bike simply passed
her and both went on their merry way."

Update: Motorcyclist killed on Oregon 11 identified
Posted by The Oregonian July 20, 2008 11:57AM
Oregon State Police have identified a motorcyclist killed in a collision
with a pickup on Oregon 11 at the Athena Junction in northeast Oregon
Saturday.
David Larry Sundstrom, 61, died at the scene. His wife Jeanine Carolyn
Sundstrom, 52, remains in critical condition at St. Mary Medical Center
in Walla Walla, Wash. The Puyallup, Wash. couple were wearing helmets at
the time of the accident.
Hans Schroeder, 40, of Athena was traveling north and making a left turn
when his pickup was struck in the front bumper by a southbound
motorcycle, according to a release by the Oregon State Police. Schroeder
and two female passengers, ages 19 and 20, were not injured.
State police troopers from Pendleton are continuing the investigation
with the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office.
Another, left turn collision and an "Honest officer, I never saw the
motorcycle!" moment.

My first thought was, it's uncanny how much this looks like
a Bonneville. But then, perhaps it and the Bonneville are both
instantiations of a particularly good abstract motorcycle type which
I suppose would be named British Roadster, although a more whimsical
choice might be Spagthorpe Lurcher.
The lurcher is a functional type, not a breed and has an interesting
social history. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lurcher
The Spagthorpe Lurcher would be a cross between a nimble, robust working
type (Border Collie) and an all-out racer (Spagthorpe Greyhound).
