I think he is the only choice if Yamaha has even a bit of foresight.
First of all, Lorenzo now has the number one spot firmly covered.
Second of all, who knows if the Rossi that comes back from this type
of injury will be the same Rossi... I for one doubt it. He's older,
and history is full of great riders that weren't quite as eager to
risk things for that extra tenth after that one big crash that hurt
them. So Yamaha better develop someone, and do so fast. Lorenzo right
now seems great, but he is also one to overcook things and suffer yet
another injury that slows him down. Spies is the guy Yamaha needs to
bring up, quickly.

Heh, actually there was!
FIRST PERSON/OPINION
By John Ulrich
The idea of an alternative series in racing is nothing new.
If recent history is any guide, the issues are always control and/or
money, and when it's over there’s always a big tab somebody has to pay.
In the mid-1990s, it was AMA versus Roger Edmondson, Part 1. Edmondson
had brought his Supersport classes to the AMA, and ran AMA Pro road
racing as a joint venture with the AMA. During his tenure, the program
made money for the first time, and the net was split 50/50 between
Edmondson and the AMA. According to sworn testimony in a subsequent
lawsuit, at one point when the net was $600,000 and the 50/50 split was
$300,000 each, Patti DiPietro pointed out that AMA could keep all the
money if Edmondson was cut out of the deal.
Again, according to sworn testimony at trial, American Honda’s Ray
Blank (then a sitting member of the AMA Board of Directors), told
Edmondson, “We can take this from you and there’s nothing you can do
about it.”

Good to see Josh Hayes is racing in WSS today and qualified 12th.
His first ride on the bike was at a wet Cadwell Park practice day. I'd
love to know what he thought of *that*.

If one assumes where there is smoke there is fire, then we should hear
some sort of OEM-DMG compromise at Laguna or shortly thereafter. If
you throw in what the promoters have been saying as well, then I think
that'll mean retention of at least some of the existing classes for at
least one more year; I don't see how DMG gets all the horses into the
corral without that concession.
So what would that look like? A SB class, of course, and that might be
any of the three possibilities - current AMA, '09 proposed AMA, or
WSB. WSB seems the least likely, given that the Euro OEMs that
obviously prefer that aren't even going to be racing in it. If this is
a one-year truce, then existing rules are most likely, and WSB almost
certain for 2010. But if they want to extend beyond next year, then
the proposed rules move to the front of the line, because they reduce
costs some and Yamaha will most likely want that (as the most
testicularly-challenged Japanese OEM).

Short report
Ran over Thursday morning on my trusty GS750EC (1978)
with some buds. Did the paddock walk which was OK
for what it was but paddock was nearly as tightly locked
as any GP in Yurp. Crew flushed us out at the end and
forced Bozo, just 12 days from total knee replacement,
to walk the length of pit lane instead of going back
out the way we came in. Pigs.
Friday was a mess and tons of fun in the rain. Stands
were pretty full for raining and a Friday, reportedly 30k
people. Practice was fun to watch as always and my
fears about Indy car turns 1 and 2 where proved unfounded
when a number of folks went off in the rain at 1 and
never came closer than 100 yards to the wall. Indy 2
I didn't see anybody fall and it might be slightly closer
but riders didn't overly complain that I know of.
Saturday was brilliant. Rossi on pole and Lorenzo taking
front row from Hayden on the last few seconds.

"Your press materials raise more questions than they answer. How about
you field a few questions live, vs. via e-mail, starting with, what's
the 2009 schedule, what tracks do you have? What teams will participate
now that Yamaha has declared its intent to run in the DMG series? What
operational staff do you have? What are you going to do for Airfence,
since the existing fleet went with DMG, and how are you going to deploy
whatever you replace it with? What are you going to do for timing and
scoring? What will the purse and contingency payouts be? What are you
going to do for the non-factory teams and riders who make up everything
past the first two rows of the grid?
We had 12 bikes finish one of the Superbike races at Cal Speedway
earlier this year, and several of them were actually Superstock bikes.
How are you going to get more than the existing nine Superbikes on the
grid?
How many of the 300+ MIC member firms have signed off on this plan?
