Big heavy bike, Metzelers (ME880s specifically) are not the tires for them.
Soft tread, wears quickly and once they're pretty well worn but not worn out
they can get some real shitty handling characteristics. On lighter bikes they
might be great but a big ol' bagger haulin' a bunch of shit is no place for 'em
in my opinion. I never got over 4600 miles out of one. The front me880 I put on
my '01 road king was the noisiest tire I've ever had on any bike, it almost
sounded like a knobby. The rear sounded like a snow tire from a 4wd truck. I'm
not the only one here that's bitched about them handling funny when worn, wearin
out quickly or bein' noisy but I might be the only one this time. All of this
was before I got my Ultra in Aug of '04.
Personally I learned something from my Metzeler experience. Number one, If it's
recommended to you by someone on the internet it might not always be a good
idea, even if you feel you can trust them. Number two, If something is actually
working good for you then why change it. I shoulda known better and now I do. My
Ultra bagger's got a HD Dunlop on it and it works just fine with a little over
9k miles on it and countin'. It wears good, will drag the boards off on turns
and only spins a little bit before doin' a real nice wheelie.
