I was wondering what you guys thought about buying the K98 Mauser that
is advertised in American Hunter. They have Service Grade for $249
with parts that do not have matching serial #'s and Collector Grade
for $399 with all parts having matching Serial #'s. I am wondering
about how reliable the Mauser is in general and what kinds of issues I
might expect from them.
Thanks
Mitchell

I have a sporterized K98. I don't have any particular reliability
issues with it. The Military Channel's list of the top 10 combat rifles
rated it #6 ahead of the M14 and 1903 Springfield. The only issues I
see with owning a K98 are getting suitable ammo for it and whether you
want to own one at all. Personally I'd want to personally inspect any
60+ year old rifle before I buy it. To me matching serial numbers
aren't as important as the quality of the wood, wear, fit, and finish.
Quality varied over the many years K98s were produced.

Excellent investment!! I haven't read the ad in detail. Over the
years I have purchased numerous Mausers. Some have literally
skyrocketed in value. Many I purchased in the 70's I've traded
recently making a very handsome profit. Any European and some of the
Turkish Mausers are not only good investments but excellent shooters.
Avoid Chinese made 98 Mausers like they have a plague. Do some
internet searching and research if you decide on Turk Mauser. Lots of
good Turks, some not so. I currently buy my Mausers from www.jgsales.com
when they are available. I'm not trying to steer you away from the
Rifleman ad. Not a problem haviing more than one.

There are two schools of though on Mitchel Mausers. If you want an
"original collectable Mauser then Mitchels is not for you as many of
the guns that they refinish are altered into "non-original" status.
One example is their 98K guns that have polished bolts. German 98 K
guns had blued bolts but Mitchel gambles on the publics ignorance in
buying collectable guns and strives to make them look pretty and
flashy ( which is wonderful for the fellow that does not know that he
is buying a gun that has had the real collector value destroyed not
only through refinishing but through refinishing that was different
from the original.
One school of thought is that why spend double, or triple or quadruple
for an altered Mauser, that really is not collectable, when you can
get the same gun in original condition that is collectable and often
for way less money from the other surplus dealers.
The other school of thought is that Mitchels charges this much because
they pick out the best guns and they put a lot of labor into
refinishing them ( which is still incorrect most of the time in terms...

The sights on the No4 Enfield, M1917 Enfield and M1903A3 are better. The
quality of manufacture is usually better on the mausers.

Hello
Lots and Lots of 98 Mausers out there, copies as well in the M-48
and you can do a lot better than the 249.00 price tag! Shop the local
shows, if you buy one, stock up on 8MM ammo which is cheap and avail
right now! Look at the Bore, wood and as the other fellow said, unless
your saving as a colectable, don't worry as much about all the numbers
matching, as you do the worksmanship and mechanical side of the rifle!

No. That is actually my first name. I was not aware of a Mitchell
Mauser. Good question though.

The ones I'm familiar with have been Yugo 48s, NOT the same as a
K98. If they're like the Yugos, Mitchell refinishes them, restamps
the numbers and basically destroys any collector's value. Whether
this suits you or not depends on whether you want to shoot it or
collect it. Cheap surplus 8x57 is going the way of all surplus ammo,
fast. They do put out a good-looking gun, not sure if they replace
barrels or just slick up the outsides. Personally, given the ammo
situation, I've got several other guns I'd rather purchase for the
same kind of money.
