Subject: 3.00: Advanced Discussion
This part of the FAQ deals with advanced issues that delve into parts
of the game that have changed, or which are complex. For beginners,
this section gives the answers to some difficult questions; for players
with more experience, the discussion should provide skills that will
help solve most Magic problems. For this part of the FAQ especially,
it's worth having the Comprehensive Rulebook available while reading.
------------------------------
Subject: 3.01: Templating and identification
Magic card text uses specific templates to indicate that a particular
type of effect is intended. Some of the templates refer to the use
of particular words, some of the templates are simply idiomatic use
of English that Magic has adopted.

Recently I played in a Shadowmoor/Eventide limited tournament,
and I announced I was attacking with . My opponent
responded with "before you announce attackers, I'll use this (a
creature that taps to tap target creature), and tapped the guy I
was going to attack with. Now, I don't have a problem with that
part, but he then said that since I couldn't attack with
guy>, my attack was over (that guy was the only creature I was
going to attack with). I think I should have been able to attack
with a different creature, since he was backing up to before
attackers were announced to tap my attacker and then saying I
had already announced my attack so I couldn't change it. I
didn't ask a judge then, but now I'm curious. Given the
circumstances as described, could I then declare...

Well, that's pretty much all of it, except that I'm not talking
about from one permanent to another, but rather one type of
counter to another type of counter, say, flood counters to snow
counters, or tower counters to +1/+1 counters, or even +1/+1
counters to -1/-1 counters. thanks, -dna

This might sound more controversial than it really is, but I'd
like to know if it's ok to play cards from a set that hasn't
been released yet as long as they are reprints of cards that are
currently legal in the format I'm playing in.
Of course, I'm referring to the Shards of Alara basic lands that
are in the 10Edition boxed packs that sell for around 9.99 US (I
got my first one at WalMart, I think). They come with two
booster packs and a set of 20 lands, which seem to consist of
ten X-edition lands and 10 Shards of Alara lands. I'm sure this
has been discussed somewhere, but I don't get around much, so I
thought I would ask what the ruling is on this here. TIA, -dna

Not as such, no. Nothing in Magic changes what kind of counter something is.
There are some things that take one kind of counter off something, and put
another kind of counter onto something, and they can even be the same thing
for some of them ... but nothing 'transmutes' a counter while it's sitting
there.
The canonical example is Power Conduit, which removes any kind of counter as
part of its cost, and puts a charge counter or +1/+1 counter on something as
part of its effect.

Nope. That's when you call the judge.

Yes, it is. You may play any version of a card that's legal in a given format;
the card is considered to have current Oracle text. This includes cards from
a prerelease, etc.

Basic lands is basic lands is basic lands. Unless they're Snow-Covered, of
course.
