Subject: 3.00: Advanced Discussion
This part of the FAQ deals with advanced issues that delve into parts
of the game that have changed, or which are complex. For beginners,
this section gives the answers to some difficult questions; for players
with more experience, the discussion should provide skills that will
help solve most Magic problems. For this part of the FAQ especially,
it's worth having the Comprehensive Rulebook available while reading.
------------------------------
Subject: 3.01: Templating and identification
Magic card text uses specific templates to indicate that a particular
type of effect is intended. Some of the templates refer to the use
of particular words, some of the templates are simply idiomatic use
of English that Magic has adopted.

Subject line pretty much says it all:
Shield of the Oversoul
2{G/W}
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant creature
As long as enchanted creature is green, it gets +1/+1 and is
indestructible.
As long as enchanted creature is white, it gets +1/+1 and has flying.
Sudden Spoiling
1BB
Instant
Split second
Creatures target player controls become 0/2 and lose all abilities
until end of turn.
Let's say we've got a Watchwolf (3/3 green and white vanilla) with
Shield of the Oversoul attached to it.
Someone plays Sudden Spoiling.
I'm thinking that the Watchwolf will perhaps be a 5/5 with no
abilities. Is that correct? Or are the layers haunting me again?

Okay. First off, and this is where many people will trip and fall - "is
indestructible" does NOT give an ability to the creature! "has flying" does.
Second, any +x/+y stuff _from static abilities_ is applied in layer 6d - and
this includes the +1/+1s from SotO. Any setting-to-specific-values (without
switching) is 6b. None of this is characteristic-defining abilities, because
these are not printed on the cards they affect, so none of it's 6a.
