  Phil Foglio, the Prophet

There have been many threads in this newsgroup (rec.arts.sf.written)
about the Girl Genius webcomic.

Other Foglio projects are also on the web - Buck Godot, and What's New
with Phil and Dixie.

The latter one dealt with Dungeons and Dragons and other role-playing
games, and then moved on to the world of collectible card games. One
of their pages:

http://www.airshipentertainment.com/growfcomic.php?date=20080713

ended with a panel showing a speculation about how Magic might change
in the far future. Thus, a card that was very popular in the basic
set, Serra Angel, is shown as unfamiliar to new players.

One player asks "Is it affected by orange mana?".

In Magic: the Gathering, there are five basic colors of magic: White,
Blue, Black, Red, and Green. The strengths and weaknesses of these
different colors differ, and this is the core dynamic of the game. So
adding a new color would be a major change, but over a long time, it
could happen.

  How to Make Everyone Happy

One thing that I think would be a good idea is, if the core set in the
eleventh edition goes back to having white borders, is for a thin
black border around the edge of the white border to be present. A pile
of white-bordered cards can be distinguished from the side from a pile
of black-bordered cards, and making the cards distinguishable is
something that is desired to be avoided.

In the city where I live, at least two card shops are still selling
booster packs for Homelands and Fallen Empires at ordinary prices. One
card shop still has starter packs for the Sixth and Seventh editions
in stock. And another place, a comic book store, has piles of
individual cards - including uncommons as well as commons - available
for ten cents each. Since these cards don't include the ones most
sought after, just the ordinary ones, they do include cards from older
booster packs and older editions of the core set; I've even found
cards from Portal and Starter there.

  Unfortunately, It's Dated April 1st

The news release at this URL:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/news/20070401b

about a D&D-themed edition of Monopoly, that is. April 1, 2007.

So I guess we won't be seeing

Urza's Mine
Price $260

Urza's Tower
Price $260

Urza's Power Plant
Price $280

any time soon on a Magic: the Gathering - themed Monopoly set.

What do you use for tokens?

Author: Thomas David Baker

I'm new to Magic - I played for the first time this week. I started
with Core 9th Ed. off eBay but now have some Lorwyn theme decks.

Magic is such a good-looking game with all these illustrated cards in
meaningful formations on the table.

Yesterday I played a game with tokens in for the first time.

Yellow post-it notes with skulls drawn on them in pen really detract
from the otherwise loveliness of the look of a game-in-progress. I
don't like it!

I read a thread on this newsgroup from 2001 when only Unglued! had
offical tokens with it and no others were being produced. Has that
changed?

If not I guess some other company must have closed the gap in the
market. Here are these people spending untold amounts on more and
more expansion set cards ... surely they have a few pennies spare for
some nice tokens?

What do you use? Do you have anything better than coins/beads/paper?
Can one buy tokens that are just as nice to look at as the cards?

(Well, that was long-winded but I hope I made my question clear!)

Thanks!

That's nice.

Magic-card sales, auctions, trades, etc., go on
rec.games.trading-cards.marketplace.magic.{sales,trade,auctions} *only*;
please keep them _off_ of rec.games.trading-cards.magic.misc, and in general
off of all non-.marketplace groups in rec.games.trading-cards.*, since they
aren't welcome anywhere but on the .marketplace groups, thanks. (If you made a
mistake and posted to the wrong group, or typed a comma instead of a period,
that's okay this once - as long as you try not to do it again...)

Sales, auctions, or trades for non-Magic trading cards go on
rec.games.trading-cards.marketplace.misc only, in the same manner.
