Manual of the Game of Chess by P.R. von Bilguer, 1880 Edition

Author: samsloan
Date: May 31, 2008 20:09

I am in the process of reprinting "Manual of the Game of Chess by P.R.
von Bilguer", 1880 Edition, better known by its German title, Handbuch
des Schachspiels von P. R. von Bilguer.

This book is extremely rare. I happened to come across a copy in good
condition. I have been unable to find another one, and I have searched
everywhere.

This book is the equivalent of Modern Chess Openings, but for the 19th
Century. Like Modern Chess Openings, it is packed with long columns
and lines of analysis. It is in German but that should not prove a
problem because, like Chess Informant, it is multi-lingual. All you
need to do is remember that D = Queen, S = Knight, T = Rook and L =
Bishop.

The fact that it is 128 years old is the main reason I am reprinting
it. It contains opening traps and tricks which are no longer played
and are no longer to be found in any openings book.

The book is 6 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches and 720 pages. Every page is jam-
packed with chess analysis. I did not even know that so much analysis
had been done back in 1880.

Somebody knock off Osama, um er Obama, well both, if we could (haha)

Unless Paul Truong runs away to Hungary or Vietnam he is going to
get locked up for a many years. But I am terrified that Judge
Denny Chin may not help with getting Truong indicted on federal
charges. My legal team told me that if Truong was indicted on the
most suitable charges he could face execution.

I'm sure that if we all put our heads together we'll find enough
reasons to persuade a fair judge that Truong should be executed.
But Chin is not such a judge. You only need to look at Chin and
Truong to see why Truong has little to fear. That one of my wives
is Japanese (born in Hiroshima) and that Chin's ancestors are
from Nanjing might not help us persuade him.

While on the subject of Judge Chin one cannot help but examine a
certain news channel. Fox made Judge Chin. Before the Fox lawsuit
no one had or would ever had heard of Judge Chin.

I never watch TV so this is hearsay, but my wife heard this too:
"Somebody knock off Osama, um er Obama, well both, if we could"
were the words of Liz Trotta (no friend of our Libertarian Party)
on Fox in a discussion about the RFK gaffe by Hillary Clinton.

  Ed Labate vs. Ed Trice

Author: samsloan
Date: May 31, 2008 09:32

Things are really heating up and it is going to be interesting as Ed
Labate and Ed Trice threaten each other.

I do not know either of them so I have no opinion as to who is right,
but Ed Labate has been involved in chess both as a book seller and as
a tournament organizer for at least 40 years whereas Ed Trice is a
recently arrived huxter, so I am inclined to believe that Ed Labate is
right and Ed Trice is a fraud.

On the other hand, Ed Labate filed a frivolous lawsuit against the
USCF around 25 years ago for refusing to list his tournaments in the
TLA section of Chess Life and was paid a settlement of $30,000. Ed
Trice gets favorable mention for revealing that Rob "The Robber"
Mitchell was trying to scam him for $35,000. Ed Trice has received a
lot of favorable publicity on the Polgar websites.

Fixing The Draw Problem: New Promotion Rule

Author: Ray Gordon, creator of the pivot

All one needs to do to ma=ke "theory" irrelevant withuot destroying the
opening is to change the rules of chess so that a pawn promotes to the piece
on the file in which it is promoted (such as a b or g pawn to a knight,
etc.).

Promotion of a king pawn can be to either any piece, a queen.
