Another year of Fake Numbers from the USCF

USCF Executive Director Bill Hall writes the following in the USCF
BINFOS:

"To the USCF Executive Board:

"The audit is winding down and we should have a Draft for circulation
by Tuesday. The bottom line should show a loss of $53,000. Although
you never can be happy with a loss, considering the extra expenditures
for Spectrum (and the profit-sharing plan), increased legal expenses,
a significant write-off in inventory, and some significant losses on
two investments, I believe we did not do too poorly this year."

If the loss was really only $53,000 we might agree. By the way, that
number includes $13,000 in unnecessary Internet Insurance that Joel
Channing insisted that the USCF get to protect HIS assets.

However, as Grant Perks explains in a posting to Susan's
chessdiscussion group, that number is arrived at after the office
ignored the $50,000 cap that the delegates voted to place on imaginary
money received from the Life Membership Account. Grant Perks explains,
"the office knows the year end adjustment will be made each year and
they can spend based on the cap being reversed".

  1. e4 c5 2. Bc4??? What to do with it?

Help Bot (White) Played: 1. e4 c5 2. Bc4 there is no opening after
that.

Help Bot win the game by trapping a Knight with his Bishop. I went to
search for this line and found only people with low rating play Bc4.
Higher Rated (2700+) player never play Bc4 Why?

What was wrong with easy Level that it has to lose the Knight? Can you
mark the wrong moves?

Earliest Game score known from the New World

Author: jeremy.p.spinrad

Just curious as to what is known. There was plenty of chess before the
automaton came to the US, but I do not know of game scores. I have an
1827 game in which a Philadelphia lady beats the automaton (I am
guessing that this is what Wikipedia means when referring to the 1st
modern female player in 1830; there are certainly many female players
known but they may mean this is the first game score of a female
player), but I imagine this can be beaten.

Halloween Gambit: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nxe5?! Nxe5

I taught this gambit as the opening and Easy Level lost a knight for a
Pawn and lost the match to Chrisf.

Is this opening good enough or I should remove this Opening from
GetClubs Book?

As giving a knight for a pawn is no good.

Grant Perks Undermines Delegate Mandate, Says $120,000 in Fake Money Has Been Restored

Grant Perks Undermines Delegate Mandate, Says $120,000 in Fake Money
Has Been Restored

In a shocking series of postings to Susan Polgar's Chess Discussion
Forum, Grant Perks stated on Saturday that the auditors had caught the
error made by the delegates in placing a $50,000 cap on the amount of
imaginary money the USCF office can claim to have received.

Here is what Perks wrote at:
http://www.chessdiscussion.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1338&start=10

The $70K adjustment is a delegate mandate that impacts the 2008 and
2009 financials. The cap hits during the second half of the fiscal
year. Apparently the delegates thought the office would be more frugal
with this limitation in place. It doesn't make sense to me since the
office knows the year end adjustment will be made each year and they
can spend based on the cap being reversed.

Normally the USCF accounts for a life membership by amortizing the
dues payment. Currently, dues are amortized over 20 years, starting in
the year the member joins. $1,000 spread over 20 years is $50 per year
per member. Under GAAP the annual income recognized is about $120,000
for all of the life memberships currently being amortized.

Thank you Bill Brock for your One Penny book!!!

Author: samsloan
Date: Jul 21, 2008 18:05

Bill Brock sold me a book on eBay for one cent. Of course, he probably
did not realize that he was selling it to me because the real identity
of the buyer is not generally revealed until the auction is over.
Also, I did not immediately realize that he was the seller when I bid
on that and other chess books.

The book Bill Brock boldly sold me was "The 64-Square Looking Glass:
Great Games of Chess in World Literature" by the late Burt Hochberg.
Item number 220253883953

So I bought Burt's book by Bill Brock.

Naturally, I am sure that Bill Brock did not intend to sell Burt's
book for only one penny. He probably intended one cent to be just a
low starting bid. When only I bid for it, I became the buyer.

Naturally, I feared that Bill Brock would not send Burt's book when he
realized that I was the buyer. However, not only did it arrive but it
came by UPS, an expedited delivery. Tracking number was

I'm training for a match with my flashlight

I didn't feel too bad when mainframe computers could beat me. And
when I got whipped by desktops and laptops...., well, they're are
strong as mainframes once were. But it's harder to feel OK about
losing to the cell phone. If the flashlight beats me, I might
challenge the can-opener.
