As my seven-year-old daughter is now a "premium scholastic member", I
just received the December 2008 issue of "Chess Life for Kids".
The cover is terrible, awful, horrible, the worst cover I have ever
seen on any publication of any kind anywhere.
I want to know who authorized or ordered this. The cover is so bad I
do not even want to open the magazine.
Actually, the inside of the magazine is OK.
The cover features two completely dark and blurry photographs. The top
photo is completely out of focus. I have no idea what this is. Looking
inside the magazine, there is no information as to what this is a
picture of.
The bottom photo is of a bunch of Asian kids wearing dark shirts and,
since the background is black too, just about the only thing you can
see is their faces. Inside the magazine there is little information as
to who these kids are or why their pictures are on the cover.
The inside does not say exactly who is the editor of the magazine who
did this. Whomever did this should have nothing to do with
publications in the future. Bill Hall's name is at the top. Does that
mean he authorized this?

Bill,
My mediation offer was and still is solely for the USCF and not all
the parties. This was made very clear to you a number of times.
However, I am not completely against the idea of including the board
members. My position is still the same as it was earlier this year in
Tulsa. It is not applicable to other defendants. Other parties can
contact my attorneys directly if they would like to make a settlement
offer.
Susan Polgar
In a message dated 12/20/2008 10:22:04 P.M. Central Standard Time,
Chessoffice writes:
The EB Legal Subcommittee, most others named in the Texas lawsuit,
and our attorneys have been discussing the possibility of mediation
and we hope to have a decision soon. Although direct talks showed the
two sides to have completely opposite positions with no apparent
possibility of compromise, I believe that there is always a chance
that any dispute can be settled through mediation, and it should not
be ruled out.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Hugh Myers.
I first met him during the 1956 Eastern States Open in Washington DC.
I played him during the 1969 World Open Championship in San Juan
Puerto Rico. (This was not a Goichberg tournament. It was this
tournament that gave Goichberg the idea of using "World Open" as the
name of a chess tournament.)
I got to know him a lot better during the 1986 World Chess Olympiad in
Dubai where he was initially appointed as the bulletins editor but was
later replaced by Bob Wade.
I exchanged correspondence with him over the years and he wrote at
least one article about my opening systems in his "Myers Opening
Bulletin".
I had not heard from him in several years and I believe that he has
long been in poor health.
He was married several times and lived for years in the Dominican
Republic and in Puerto Rico. I think he originally lived in Iowa,
where he died. I do not know if he had any children, but as I recall
he did have some.

Dear Chesslovers,
Chessbase is selling the latest Fritz 10 at a special price. Like every year
they are still trying to get your money with an old and buggy piece of
software. We at Arena offer you the latest free Rybka 2.2 bundeled with
Arena 2.0 for FREE !
Yes you herd it right it's free. Also free chess opening books are available
from our site and did I mention we don't kick you if you tell us about bugs,
we just fix them. Did I mention Arena 2.0 is free ?
Many thanks to Vasik Rajlich for allowing us to bundle Rybka 2.2 with his
"favorite GUI" as you can read in the interview on our page.
Best,
Michael Diosi

Mike Nolan has just released statistics regarding trends ever since
the Goichberg "New Plan" went into effect, under which only "Premium"
USCF Members will get Chess Life magazine.
In advocating his "New Plan", President Goichberg estimated that 80%%
would sign up for the premium membership and only 20%% would take the
no-magazine-membership.
However, the statistics thus far have been the opposite. So far in
every membership category except for adults, more than 70%% of all new
and renewing members are taking the no magazine choice.
President Goichberg calls this a great success. Here is an exact quote
from President Goichberg.
"The Young Adult, Youth, and Scholastic numbers look great, with 2186
total memberships compared to 1868 during the same time last year,
even though the net we retain per member just increased. Maybe two
weeks isn't enough of a sample to get excited about, though.
