PSYCHOLOGISTS EXPLAIN WHY FLAME WARS HAPPEN

Author: UNIT 731
Date: Jan 20, 2008 22:16

http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2006/02/70179

"Don't work too hard," wrote a colleague in an e-mail today. Was she
sincere or sarcastic? I think I know (sarcastic), but I'm probably
wrong.

According to recent research published in the Journal of Personality and
Social Psychology, I've only a 50-50 chance of ascertaining the tone of
any e-mail message. The study also shows that people think they've
correctly interpreted the tone of e-mails they receive 90 percent of the
time.

"That's how flame wars get started," says psychologist Nicholas Epley of
the University of Chicago, who conducted the research with Justin Kruger
of New York University. "People in our study were convinced they've
accurately understood the tone of an e-mail message when in fact their
odds are no better than chance," says Epley.

  dumb bet?

Author: simms
Date: Jan 20, 2008 21:52

in the past when i post hands like this people tell me to quit whining, so let
me just say there is a questions that i am serious about in here...

UTG in 1-3 nl, dealt kq.  make it 6 to go, 2 callers, one from the bb.  flop
comes down KQ2 rainbow.  bb checks to me, i bet 15 into an $18 pot. (i chose not
to overbet the two pair because no flush draw)  both guys call.

turn 7 d, so there are now two diamonds on the board, and $63 in the pot.  BB
checks again.  i bet $50 first guy folds BB calls again.

river 8 d.  BB checks again.  I really wasn't worried about a flush.  There was
only one diamond in the flop and he called two pot size bets.  I figured if he
had flopped a set, i woulda heard back from him on one of the streets...not
check-calls all the way through.  so i thought i had the best hand.  thinking i
had the best hand, i bet $100.

he flips 56d for little flush.  in hindsight, it seems like that $100 bet was
real stupid.  the only hands calling that bet are ones that beat two pair,
right?  maybe AK calls, but i dont think there is any other hand that i could
beat that calls that bet.  should i have just checked at that point?  bet less?
compared to the pot, $100 was reasonable size, but i just dont think anyone is
calling with a hand i can beat.

thanks as always,

Oh, you're gone already?  I'm in my room at the Lady Luck right now.  And I'll
tellya, everyone's sick.  I thought I was finally over it, but soon as I got
here I feel like crap.  My throat hurts so much I can barely type.  I was going
to go out gambling and perhaps looking for meth skanks, but I just might stay
here right now and order room service.  Maybe I'll play some online poker on my
laptop.  Wish me luck.

Re: Do you win more at No-Limit or Limit and why?

I win more at Limit, because that's what I play B&M. I don't get a
chance to play live very often, so I'm almost always "out of practice".
Playing Limit is just easier to play sporadically. I'd happily play
$10/$20 - but in practice I usually find myself in a $4/$8 game. I feel
more comfortable in a strange $4/$8 LHE game than in a strange $1/$2
NLHE game, live. But...that's a question I'm starting to ask myself
more and more.

Online, I only play NLHE, because (with apologies to Willie Sutton)
"that's where the money is". I sit there and grind (just like in limit)
and every once in awhile some idiot just pushes his stack...
