Sub Zero Fridge - stopped making ice - help

Date: Oct 24, 2007 08:42

I have an older (8+ years) Sub Zero that stopped making ice
yesterday. Until now I've never had a problem with the unit.

Yesterday morning I heard the unit making a mild grinding/rumbling
sound, coming from the vicinity of the ice maker. I remove the ice
bucket and pushed the control lever up and then back down and the
noise stopped. Dumped the old ice in the sink and returned the bucket
to it place.

Since then, no ice, and the (very few) items in the freezer started to
thaw (they may have started thawing before I noticed the problem).

This morning I turned the thermostat for the freezer to off and I'm
letting it defrost to see if that changes the situation. I've never
defrosted (or done any other maintenance) to the fridge before. I do
_not_ want to replace it.

Can anyone suggest what the problem is? Or what ballpark I'll be in $-
wise for a repair if required (or what price range)?

I live in NYC.

Thanks

You'll hate me for asking this. But do you have an on-off button for the
ice-maker. Maybe it got turned off. Sometimes I notice that I don't have
ice to put in the ice chest, and I've found that DH has turned it off. It
would be nice if it were something as simple as that.

Defrosting may do the trick if a piece of ice jammed the mechanism. Ice
makers are the biggest singe problem with refrigerators. Easy to replace
though.
