That sounds like a vent defect to me. Granted, the vent allows smoke out slowly,
but you should certainly be able to see some coming out if the oven is filled
with smoke.

Not necessarily -- it might be that the rush of oxygen that enters the
oven when you open the door is required to produce the smoke. I have
noticed this effect myself. I must admit that I am not entirely
satisfied with my own explanation, which relies on the idea that the
environment inside the oven be low on oxygen because something in
there is using it all up more rapidly than it can diffuse in through
the vent or other cracks. That seems possible but a little unlikely
to me.
