It's easy to understand. First... borrow one of your neighbor's
smallest crock-pots.
Buy a bag of good dried beans. Your grocery will have a good selection.
Soak some overnight then cook them the following day. Salt them a bit
near the end, but don't season them. Compare to the canned variety...
see what you've been missing.
Or, buy some oat groats or steel cut oats (or even hulled barley). Soak
for a day. Cook them in the crock pot over night. Wake up to the
easiest, most convenient breakfast imaginable.
Or, buy a bag of prunes, or dried apricots or even dried dates...
Overnight them in a crock pot with a bit of water. See what great
stewed fruit is about. Consider all of the fabulous things that you can
do with custom fruit spreads: pastries, sauces, roasted meat glazes.
The trick is to start small. A one or 1.5 quart crock-pot is just right
for most things. That way you're not tempted to make "a stew" or
"a-meal-in-a-pot", like all those Betty Crocker cookbooks suggest.
