Update: Not only is the water level gauge a kludge, it is also not
very accurate. This could be because of the way it is attached. There
is some play. It is also because it is difficult to read. You have to
peer down into the pot and estimate when the water level reaches the
tabs that are protruding horizontally from the angled metal gauge.
I just took the following readings by filling the kettle to each tab
and then pouring the water into a Pyrex measuring cup:
Actual
Tab Volume Diff
0.50 L 450 ml -50 ml
0.75 L 600 ml -150 ml
1.00 L 950 ml -50 ml
1.25 L 1,200 ml -50 ml
Max 1,425 ml -50 ml
Top 1,750 ml
The top tab reads "MAX" (not "1.5 L").
That last reading (Top) was me filling the kettle as nearly full as I
thought is could go without causing boiling water to spray out of the
spout. For heating to less that boiling, it can probably go to 1,800
ml or more.
I should retest the 0.75 L tab, but I'm too lazy. ;-)
Despite these little annoyances, I still love this kettle. I wish they
had done a better job on some of these details, but heating water is
much, much easier than before
-- especially for temps less than
boiling.
Damn. The metric system is SO much easier to use than the English
system.
