Many people have heard me talk of my aunt & uncle that I visit every year in
Wisconsin, LaVern & Margaret. On our way to my mom's surgery, we got word from my
cousin Dee that LaVern had fallen ill with pneumonia, and because he had emphysema,
his lungs had just given up. At 88 yrs old, he wasn't a candidate for any possible
measures of help. My aunt, who is just about the nicest, sweetest, and most loving
person I've ever seen, heard of, or read about, has to make the decision to turn off
his ventilator, which is the only thing keeping him alive.

Much as I would love to be able to go out there and be there for her, I simply cannot
afford to. Still I would like to show my love and support, and send her some things
that would be helpful to her right now. I don't know how to explain it other than I'd
like to send things that she's going to need, but won't have time to worry about. I
don't know what else to do.

Any ideas? They'll all be appreciated.

  Felt like Christmas

When my package arrived yesterday.
I received an e-mail from a fellow rfc-er a few days ago to be on the
lookout for a largish package. Also in the e-mail was the cryptic
message that it contained something I had mentioned in the group that
I didn't have.

This person is very kind and considerate.
Considering how shy and reserved this person is. ;-) I'm sure this
person would like to remain anonymous and not be brought into the
limelight with accolades of her/his generosity and goodness.

I feel safe posting this as I'm sure this person is busy getting ready
to go to France so this person won't have time to read the newsgroup.

Not only did the package contain the pie plate I have been without, I
also unwrapped 4 jars of lovingly made jams and jellies.

I am truly touched and grateful.
My new pie plate Yippiee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with the jams and jellies.

  Clever Market, uh, Marketing

Author: Terry Pulliam Burd

The cheese manager at my local Ralph's stupidmarket has started
putting out cheese samples, which seems a very clever thing to do. He
has these displays with little plastic domes covering small squares of
cheese, toothpicks handy and a small trashcan for the used toothpicks.
He also has a few wrapped wedges of the cheese on offer, for impulse
buyers such as myself, with the display. He puts out all sorts of odd
and exotic cheese and, partly because I run into this market after
work and lunch was a long while ago, I always sample one or two. And I
very, very often buy one or two. Clever lad, but I'm also grateful to
him, as he's introduced me to some lovely cheese that I might
otherwise never have tried.

And, perversely, I generally eschew *manned* sample displays such as
those you see at Costco, Sam's and in stupidmarkets on the weekends.
Any behavioral scientists out there want to explain *that*?? Or not.
I'm too shy, retiring and sensitive as it is :-)

  New Coffeemaker

Author: Terry Pulliam Burd

Disclaimer: I have absolutely not one cent invested in this company
and no reason to promote it other than to say...

Am I the last person on the planet to learn of the Keurig
coffeemaker?? This thing is *brilliant* It brews single cup coffee so
you get a fresh cup of coffee every time, you can have a half dozen
flavors/types of coffee over the course of the day, you don't need
running water to clean the thing out (okay, the k-cups ain't cheap,
but...) and the DH and I (and the boss and I) don't have to
figuratively arm wrestle as to who gets their choice of coffee that
day. Well, actually, I don't drink much coffee-coffee, but I do like
mochas, tea and hot chocolate, all of which this little beauty can
produce both before and after the DH (and the boss) have made their
coffee-coffee. It even does a fairly acceptable espresso (no crema,
but pretty tasty, anyway).

  Great time at a party.

Author: Edwin Pawlowski
Date: May 31, 2008 19:07

We just got back from a great party. I got a call the other day from a
friend of a friend that I met briefly about a year ago. She invited me to a
party she was having for her husband, a chef . We were, of course,
delighted to be asked, even if it was only 6 hours notice. We had other
plans but cancelled them.

There were about 20 people there and we took a couple of beef tenderloins,
two bottles of wine, a single malt scotch, single batch bourbon, a case of
mixers and a keg of beer, as requested. One of the other guests brought a
bag of chips and a container of dip so there was plenty of good food.

The hostess also passed the hat so we could contribute toward a gift for her
husband. I was a little short of cash after buying the food, but she took
credit cards so I'd not be embarrassed at not giving towards the gift. I
took the six installment plan.

We had a great time and I hope I get invited again next year.
