Moment of lame..er...shame....

Friday I had to make up some mounting assemblies for some hi pressure
coolant pumps for some machine tools I was retrofitting. Ive made them
before using UniStrut, and my lil bitty Lincoln Weldpac 100, with good
results, but the flux core slag was not fun to brush off. It was a
rush job, had to get them made, other stuff was depending on it, the
cell phone was ringing nonstop, a client had bounced a check, everyone
wanted everything done today!!!!

I happened to be in a shop that has a welding department, little used,
that Ive access to, so cut the required bits of unistrut on the worst
piece of shit abrasive saw Ive ever had the misfortune to be inflicted
with, then started hunting for a grinder to knock off some of the
galvanize in the weld areas. Found 3. All dead or shooting sparks.
The imported 10" pedistal grinder ran for 2 minutes, blew out a BIG
cloud of magic smoke and expired nosily as the bearings seized up and
the windings turned incandescent before the 50 amp breaker popped....

So there I am with a file, trying to knock off galvanized.....phone
ringing non stop.....

Don't feel bad, I turned on the gas and fought nasty welds the other day.
Then I put a new tank of shield gas up and started over.

Id not thought about that aspect. Indeed!

And then there was Carmen.

The crappy welds were really worth it.

And with straight CO2 shielding gas (or a CO2 mix) it's safe to
sniff the end of the gun - if the gas isn't getting all the way there,
you'll know when your nose doesn't react.
