  Stamp Out Cancer Auction

Author: George
Date: Mar 6, 2008 16:55

Well, it's time for the once a year posting concerning the Quad City
Stamp Club's annual "Stamp Out Cancer Auction." The QCSC has
sponsored this auction for 31 years now and has raised over $199,000
for the American Cancer Society. All of the items have been donated
by philatelists throughout the world and 100%% of the bids are given to
the American Cancer Society.

This year's auction can be seen at the Quad City Stamp Club website
(http://www.qcstampclub.com). Everyone is invited to participate via
email or snail mail. The auction is open to all. We are not
sophisticated enough to feature on-line bidding so unless you attend
the auction in person you must bid by mail (e or snail.).

This year the Stamp Out Cancer Auction features 15+ lots of German
material and some nice US items. Also featured are several Australian
First Flight covers (including an autographed program from a 1928
dinner honoring the "Southern Cross" aviators.

I invite the readers of RCSD to look at the auction and to join in the
bidding if anything in the auction will help fill a void in their
collection. Or even if it will start a new area of collecting for
them.

Thorshavn/Torshavn postmark on stamps of Denmark

Author: malcolm

I have 2 x 1942 King definitives with ( different ) Thorshavn
postmarks, and 2 x 1961 defs with ( similar)Torshvan pmks.

Is this Torshavn, the capital of the Faeroes or is there another
Torshavn in Denmark "proper"?

When did the spelling change, and following on from this are Danish
stamps with recognisable Faeroe postmark collected by Faeroes
collectors in the same way that Indian stamps with Rangoon or Mandalay
postmarks are sought by collectors of Burma/Myanmar?

Thanks in advance for any glimmers of light which may be forthcoming.

  Denmark 1961 King Definitive Question

Most of these stamps occur in either non-flourescent ( no u/v
reaction) or flourescent ( very bold Yellow reaction under long wave u/
v ). I have 2 of this ( a 50 o red and a 60 o red) which display a
weak white flourescent reaction under lw uv.

Does this signify that the flourescence has washed off while soaking,
or was there an issue on a whitened paper not deliberately flourescent
to meet postal mechanisation needs?

There are also a couple of the "wavy line" definitives which display
the same characteristics.

The flourescence while weaker than the yellow is quite obvious. The
paper is not noticeably whiter in daylight than the normal, although
there are some whiter non-flourescent papers used.

The Stanley Gibbons specialised does not have any mention of this.

Thanks in advance.

Malcolm
