Odd Campy Ergo detente spring failure? Or not so odd?

After about 3 seasons my rear Record Ergo lever ceased clicking today after
a few weeks of uncertain shifting. I figured the notorious EC-RE111 spring
carrier post had failed, but thought I would disassemble it before seeking
parts just to be certain. To my amazement, I found the post to be intact,
but that one of the detente springs was crushed back flat. Luckily I had
set of detente springs on hand so it was an easy job to replace them,

I have had detente springs simply wear out before so that they no longer
provided a secure hold, but I had not previously encountered a simple
crushed out flat one like this. Odd? Or not so odd, and I had just not
encountered that failure mode before?

On the bright side, they still worked well enough to get me home in spite of
the failure! And, I have mastered reassembly so that it is no longer the
vocabulary expanding experience it was before. Once you get the knack it
takes < 5 minutes to reassemble a lever with properly wound springs.
