I just bought a SPOT system and I'm thinking this could be pretty cool
(especially for trips to central America). It sits on your glareshield
and transmits your position to a sat every 10 minutes. That info is
stored and anyone you choose can go online and see your position on
Google Earth. If you go down they know where your last ping was.
You can also preprogram 3 messages. 1- I'm here and happy. 2- I need
some help 3-911. If you press 3 it goes to the command center and try
try to locate authorities to help find you (in central American it
usually mean finding nearby Americans who will assist). In any case,
this may be the end of the "so and so went down and no one knows where
they are".

If you are faced with a full blown emergency such as an engine
failure, what are you going to do?
Open ended question to generate some more conversation and
discussions. In my more than 50 years of aviation, I've had at least
18 actual emergencies and survived them all. Only one resulted in
physical injury and that was more than 40 years ago.
It is disconcerting to read the modern aircraft manuals (civilian) and
see most of it relates to shutting down the engine/s and heading for a
landing area rather than dealing with the emergency and keeping the
aircraft flying if possible.
Anyone want to hazard a guess at the major number of engine failure
causes?

If this fuel was any good the FAA wouldn't prohibit it. This stuff
eats the crap out of my weed eater and would kill my airplane engine
pretty quick.

More Proof the FAA is EXPANDING Civil Rights and Management
staff at FAA HQ while CUTTING Air Traffic controllers and
technicians. Remember, Air Safety is no longer important
at the FAA. Expanding worthless D.C. Empires and Civil Rights
staff(SCAMS)while pissing away American tax money is.
All while delays skyrocket and Air Traffic errors and
close calls expand. Your new backasswards FAA.

A freakin' GAIN of 2,267 employees to do the weenie rub
at the FAA D.C. Puzzle Palace! As my pal says, "I wish I
had the contract to sell sheet cake to the FAA!"

I don't think I saw anyone post this but apologies if I missed it.
There's a new PBS program on the behind-the-scenes workings of AirVenture
with a focus on the 2007 show. Quite interesting and well done IMO.
http://pressroom.pbs.org/programs/inside_season_2/air_show
It premiered on Feb 22nd so there should be some more airings depending on
your local PBS provider.
