Lists of Military Medal Recipients
The only military medal recipient list budgeted by Congress for ongoing
maintenance by the DOD and its military departments is the Medal of Honor, due
to the fact that it is far too expensive for each of the four Service Branches
(five during wartime) to devote precious resources to maintaining combined
rosters of military medal recipients. This task, therefore, has been undertaken
by the American War Library, founded in 1988, which has independently budgeted
all the funds required to compile and perpetually maintain roster names of
military medal recipients.
The following Medal and Award lists awarded for Individual Performance are
currently being compiled by the American War Library. The continually updated
lists are accessible to War Library subscribers from the Worldwide Personnel
Registry and Database. These lists are amended regularly as new recipient names
are acquired from official and unofficial sources. New lists will be initiated
periodically,

Typhoons Confront Iraq
August 12, 2008: Saudi Arabia is negotiating to buy another 48
Eurofighter Typhoon jet fighters, worth over $40 billion, from Britain.
Last Fall, they finally signed a long anticipated contract to buy 72
Typhoon jet fighters, for about $123 million each. Another $10 billion
will be spent on smart bombs, missiles and ammunition. There are also
several contracts for maintenance and support that total about $20
billion. About 700 Typhoons have been sold so far, and 150 delivered.
This contract was dogged by accusations of bribes paid to Saudi
officials. The Saudis consider this sort of thing normal. When British
prosecutors threatened to go after the guilty parties, the Saudis told
the Brits to call off the lawyers, or else over a hundred billion
dollars of business would go elsewhere. The British government complied.
This new deal may be a way of saying thank you, but is more likely an
effort to buy more protection from an increasingly belligerent Iran, and
a future Iraq that will be armed like Americans, and, worse yet, may
fight like them.

B-1B Gets A Legal Sniper
August 15, 2008: On August 4th, a U.S. B-1B heavy bomber used a Sniper
targeting pod in combat for the first time. These pods enable the
aircraft crew to see, in great detail, what's happening on the ground,
even when the aircraft is flying at 20,000 feet altitude. For example,
the pod users can tell if someone down there is dressed as a man or a
woman, or is carrying a weapon.
It was five years ago that the U.S. first experimented with putting a
Litening targeting pod on B-52s. Three years later, Sniper XR targeting
pods were installed on some B-1B bombers. It proved legally and
technically difficult to get the pods working on the B-1B. The legal
issue had to do with nuclear disarmament treaties (that reclassified
B-1Bs as non-nuclear bombers, but required negotiation to change the
equipment mounted on the outside of the aircraft.) The technical issues
had to do with installing the pod and associated electronics in an
aircraft that was not designed for such gear.

Rice warns Moscow about its bomber runs off Alaska
Jonathan S. Landay | McClatchy Newspapers
last updated: August 18, 2008 07:53:59 PM
BRUSSELS, Belgium — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Monday ruled out
accelerating Georgia's admission to NATO in response to the Russian
invasion. But she warned Moscow that it is playing "a very dangerous
game" by resuming Cold War-era strategic bomber patrols close to the
Alaskan coast.
"Russia is a state that is unfortunately using the one tool that it has
always used whenever it wishes to deliver a message and that's its
military power," Rice told reporters en route to an emergency meeting of
NATO foreign ministers set for Tuesday. "That's not the way to deal in
the 21st century."
With Europe divided between former Soviet bloc nations, which seek tough
measures, and major powers such as Germany, which is hesitant to
jeopardize significant business and energy ties with Russia, it was
unclear whether NATO would produce a robust response to Russia's
invasion of Georgia.
