Byron: You have a good set of arguments, but just how does one get involved
when EAA is obviously and consciously taking the direction that they are.
It is not in a vaccum as I've sent numerous e-mails to the EAA Sport
Aviation magazine and questioned the new directions. I usually get a "nice
to hear from you" with some "Madison Avenue" stuff along with it. Reading
between the lines the other message is "Yeah we hear your bitching and tough
Schit." We are going this direction because we want to. I attend numerous
fly-ins each year in support of our magazine. These usually include
Arlington, Golden West, Copper State, Sun'n Fun and Oshkosh plus several
helicopter events. I sit around the campfires at night and hear a lot of
bitching about the direction and focus being taken by EAA leaders. In fact
I don't remember hearing anyone take their side other than to agree that EAA
has been effective in lobbying FAA for changes. Of course the folks in my
area are rotary wing folks who are even more of an EAA step child than the
stuck wing builders. However, that said watch what EAA does since Rotorway
donated helicopters to EAA. I'll bet that experimental helicopters get more
play from EAA now.
Again short of becoming an EAA director, I don't see a way to "get involved"
with the high level decisions that cause the EAA focus.
BTW as a magazine publisher/editor, we more than welcome criticism. It is
the only way we have of knowing when we are not satisfying our subscribers
desires. We also welcome and actively pursue articles from our subscribers.
