  Peel Ply: Purple Glow?

I just started using a fresh batch of resin/hardener from Aeropoxy
(shipped by AS&S last week). I had a single white light off to the
side. I decided to uncover the part 30 hours after the lay up.

When I pulled the peel ply off quickly, the line where it separated
glowed bright purple for about 1/2 second. I couldn't believe it, so
I went and got a couple witnesses and immediately they saw the ply
turn from dim white to bright purple too. I proceeded to pull a
large section off very quickly and that lit up the section of peel ply
from underneath!

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Any explanation how it could
even be possible?

We held the separation line up to the light and studied it when it was
perfectly still. There wasn't the slightest bit of purple showing, as
it wasn't being ripped off. The only explanation I can muster is, the
breaking of molecular cross-linking caused a temporary, chemical
reaction, that is not visible unless the epoxy is really fresh and the
surrounding light is not too bright.

  (OT) lathes & mills : vocabulary questions

The recent thread about lathes and related machinery leaves me at a loss
with the terminology, me not being a native English speaker.

A) I think I can imagine a lathe, if I understand correctly it is called
a "tour" in French and a "draaibank" in my native Dutch. That means,
the piece of stock you are going to work on is clamped between two
centerpoints, the machine makes it turn, then you press a tool somewhere
and it cuts a circular groove. Right so far?

B) If correct on A, how to understand the dimensions? Perhaps a 36x9"
lathe has 36" between centers, and 9" is the max. diameter of basic stock?

C) if we're done about the lathe, what is a mill (in this context)?
Google wasn't too helpful on this one, given windmills and what not.

Excuse my lack of English profiency, thanks in advance!

btw "Kyle" in this context is just a name for any one of us.

OK you get your mini lathe home then what?
first thing you discover is that it just sits there inert on the
bench.
then you start wondering just how you go about actually making
anything on the lathe. after all it just spins stuff around and you
have to wind the knobs.

it doesnt take long for you to totally disbelieve the comment that the
lathe is the king of tools. (it is btw but only after you know how to
use it)

what you need to do is spend the next few nights in the workshop (oh
it probably isnt one of those yet so you'll just be working in the
shed with all the gardening tools, or in a back room) what you've got
to do is to look at the lathe, play with it a bit, oil it, play with
it a bit more and cogitate.

  Displaywindow for KY197

Any one know where I can find the display window for a KY-197 at a
reasonable price? Some where in the past some kind soul cleaned the
front of my KY-197 with a solvent. It was bad when I bought the
plane, but at least I could read the display, but now it has reached
the point where the display is illegible through the window.

  Would you install lights?

I'm getting close to covering my wings. I don't currently fly at night
and could even say that I have no intention on flying at night.
However I had no intention on getting married either. Would anyone
install lights anyway or just limit yourself to flying in the
daylight.

  Magneto Timing Question

The specs for my C-85 are upper plugs mag @ 28* BTDC and lower @ 30*BTDC.

My results are upper @ 30* BTDC and lower @ 32* BTDC.

I couldn't find a "flower pot" with attached degree wheel to borrow and
attach to the prop hub so used a little "mickey mouse" circular protractor
with a free swinging needle/pointer.

Two separate readings confirmed my 30-32. TDC was identified and impulses
unloaded before taking the readings.

My question is whether my results are acceptable for a low speed ,
experimental or need to be readjusted??

If need to be redone, I'd appreciate a little on why, please.

PS: If listening , I think "highflyer"(?) gave me some mag advice
during an "annual" a few years back which was appreciated.

  Mini Lathes

In the spirit of the Harbor Freight thread, I was at the local Tractor
Supply Co today and came across their version of the 7 x 12" mini-lathe.
Apparently, they are discontinuing the item as it was on sale for $388.
Plenty of places carry similiar lathes, the backstory being that all of them
are supposedly made at the same factory in China. The best deal I've found
other than the one at TSC is at toolsnow.com and is $399 plus about $60 in
shipping... Harbor Freight lists theirs at $499.

Thoughts? What creative uses can a homebuilder and handyman find for a
little lathe like this?

  Garmin GNC 250XL

I just went thru some wiring on an installation of a Garmin 250XL
electronics device. Somewhere in there is a comm, nav, display, data entry
device and I think there is a roll of toilet paper in there somewhere. If
this thing can do all that the manuals say, you better not try it in
turbulence and instruments. I had trouble finding the switchology to just
do comm. The helicopter panel where this is mounted would require the
passenger, and a knowledgeable one, with the directions in one hand to bend
over and read the display and operate the controls.
As a retired electronics engineer, I am aware of the penalties for having
one box do everything. Yep you said it: Single point of failure. That and
the instructions and switches become hard to use in a bouncing aircraft. If
