My sons and I are headed out early in the am for a spring bass fishin' trip
at Pomme de Terre Lake. We will not be anywhere near a wi-fi hotspot so I
am posting my predictions early. Since I do not have the benefit of
watching practice or quals, my top five is at best a wild-assed guess... in
thinking about it, my normal predictions are just as wild-assed so I guess
it won't hurt me none ;^)
Top Five (in no particular order)
Newman
Ky Busch
Stewart
Johnson
Earnhardt
Winner: Earnhardt
I know I'll be kicking myse'f since I didn't include any Roush Ferds.
Y'all have fun! Hopefully, I'll at least be able to watch the race on TV at
the resort. If nuthin' else I have the DVR ready to go.

The thing that really impressed me at Dega was how fast two cars
in a tight draft were, compared to a line of cars in a normally
spaced draft.
It didn't really seem to make any difference who the cars were,
either - Kvapil with Gilliland one inch behind were just as able
to rocket past the whole line as Earnhardt with Hamlin.
I noticed on Fox's graphic that at one point Earnhardt & whoever
he was running with at the time (probably Hamlin) hit 206 at the
end of the backstraight. That will probably alarm NASCAR; expect
a smaller plate for the fall race.
I did notice that it seemed like some drivers simply were not
able to run right up behind another car. They, and the guy
they were following, were sitting ducks to the guys who could
pair up and run close.
I also noticed that no-one seemed to be able to run a close
draft for a whole lap. I dunno if that's because it's simply
not possible to stay that close in the tri-oval, or the strain
of running that close is just too much to do it for more than
30 or 40 seconds at a time.

Isn't this ironic? After wife Ashley Judd pushed Dario Franchitti to
go to NASCAR because she was afraid he'd get hurt or killed in Indycar
racing, Dario suffered a broken ankle in Saturday's race at Talledega.
The booth announcers said it was inexcusable to plow into Dario's car
8 seconds after it had come to rest after his brush with the wall.
But, Larry Gunselman t-boned Dario's car fully 8 seconds after his
spotter should have slowed him down.
The driver's side of Dario's car was shown on TV and wow!, I was
surprised by how far the side cage was pushed in - seemed like 9
inches or so. I can see how his left foot would be broken or crushed.
I'm surprised the cage collapsed like it did.
Get well Dario. http://www.thatsracin.com/news/story/13442.html

OK, I do not like Kyle Bush, but didn't he pass below the yellow line and
improve his place when he was going for the lead and push JJ up and out.
That is not racing, that is bending the rules. Also, didn't he have his foot
on the roof afterwards, isn't this also a rule violation now. And doesn't
Nascar punish for ANY infraction? Hope he enjoys his fame, because his day
will come, just like Dale Sr. told JG he better enjoy because it doesn't
last long.

Just thought I'd mention that my ol' tomcat Toby is also a NASCAR fan. He
pays absolutely no attention to the TV unless a race is on. He can be
snoozing on the couch and when I turn on the race, he wakes up and watches
it with me. Kind of amazing 'cept I'm afraid he's a Toyota fan, God
forbid.....
;^)

my best guess...
Top Five (no particular order)
Stewart - 0
Ky Busch - 1 Thanks Kyle for keepin' me from skunkdom!
Earnhardt - 0
Edwards - 0
Biffle - 0
but the winner is....... Earnhardt... it's only fitting since Dega is the
capitol of Jr. Nation. -0
Sure looked like it wuz Jr's race for awhile. The Dodge's also looked like
they might gang up again and pull off another Daytona, but it was not
be be.
Congrats to JPM for a fine race and in fact kudos to everyone for a very
exciting race.
Even tho' I'm no Ky Bu fan, that kid has really impressed me. We may be
looking at the next Earnhardt.
On to Richmond!

The finishing list I'm looking at doesn't list manufacturer, but I think I'm
seeing two Dodges in the top 10: Montoya and Newman. +1
> 2) top Toyota will NOT be Smoke or Rowdy
Obviously wrong on that one!

Oh come on now. What's weird isn't 3 go-or-go-homers in the T5, what's
weird is that the T8 isn't all go-or-go-homers.
At Dega, with the CoT where you can't play with the body much, in
qualifying where there's no draft, it comes down purely to motor.
And the g-o-g-h cars, with their zero-weight oils and no altenator
and all the other tricks can easily gain 10 hp over the other
cars. The surprise to me is that they all didn't run 187mph laps
like Nemechek.
