TBH I suspect it's more of an ass in sheep's clothing, Alonso did
leave them for a reason, because they couldn't match the development
of McLaren and Ferrari for long, and that kind of difference really
comes out when there's a big shift in the regulations. I don't think
Renault are going to be a name to reckon with this year.

Or kick-ass in sheep's clothing. Time will tell.

In any case, Walter retired, what, two decades ago?

I think it's difficult. The easiest way to sandbag is to get off the
throttle or not get all the way on it on the straights. But then
assuming the rest of the lap is at meaningful speeds you'd expect the
split times to reveal that Renault (or whatever other team) is fast
every where but on the straight. And it's easy enough these days to
figure out if somebody is doing the maximum revs or not.

It's entirely possible, but I'm not sure it's that easy. I would even
imagine that you could cruise (relatively speaking) down the straight
and still do meaningful testing - you don't test the aero and the
suspension on the straights anyway.

You could even just drop the revs and tell your mechanics to
constantly and loudly moan about "that fucking ECU"

Yes, you're missing the point.
