Why Formula One?

I often watch MotoGP and always enjoy the close, aggressive racing and
multiple overtaking.
My son, an avid F1 fan throughout the 1980s and 1990s admits that he
now mainly watches NASCAR (he lives in the USA) and I find GP2,
Touring Cars and even the occasional club meeting infinitely more
exciting than F1.
Why then am I obsessed with F1? Why are any of us?
F1 is said to be the pinnacle of motor sport. The cars are the most
sophisticated in the world and the drivers are assumed to be the most
skilful yet that very sophistication militates against overtaking and
the drivers are buried so deep in their cockpits and supported by so
much technology that it is often difficult to appreciate their skills
yet you have only to read this ng to realize that F1 engenders
passionate loyalties in a way that I don't believe any other category
of racing does.
I shall be on my computer at 0900 sharp on Thursday and I'll avidly
follow every session until the winner crosses the line at Monaco on
Sunday. It'll probably be a boring race but I'll still do the same
thing in a fortnight's time for Canada.
Why? Damned if I know. ...
