[Delayed] Overtaking Statistics #14 - Monza

Author: Brian Lawrence
Date: Sep 22, 2008 04:25

Introduction for New Readers
============================

2008 is the 11th season that I have posted these amateur overtaking
analyses. My intention was to allow easier comparisons between Grands
Prix, seasons, circuits, drivers, etc.

In order to make any meaningful and/or useful observations it is essential
to produce the stats in as consistent a way as possible. To do this I have
devised several "rules" that I try to follow for each event. Please note
before posting to complain that I missed an obvious passing manoeuvre that
it has probably been excluded because of one of my "rules". The rules are
outlined in the "Disclaimer" below - please read it.

This analysis was mainly derived from the official FIA lap chart, which is
usually available from www.fia.com, http://forix.autosport.com or
www.autosport.com/f1/ on race day or the following day. The original charts
remain copyright of the FIA.

Other excellent Formula One websites are available. This analysis is
completely unofficial.

Mosley wants standard engine for F1

Author: Stephen M Baines
Date: Sep 18, 2008 00:25

According to L'Equipe...

From http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/news/detail/080917140331.shtml

"Max Mosley said he would like to see each Formula One team use the same
engine.

The FIA President told the French sports daily L'Equipe that the move to
a common engine would put a lid on costs and also make F1 teams'
research more road-relevant."

Hmm. I can really see the engine manufacturers liking that. A Ferrari
powered by Toyota, or a Honda powered by Ferrari. Yeah, right...

The man is deranged.

  "The Conductor"

Author: Dillon Pyron
Date: Sep 16, 2008 15:30

I finally watched the race this afternoon. I noticed that, just for a
second, Vettel started to wave his arms at the start of the Italian
national anthem, then stopped and it almost looked like he blushed.

Some might call him brash for doing that, I don't, he looked happy.
But in three years when we see him on the top of the podium wearing a
red suit waving his arms, remember that I predicted it.

Of course, he's going to have to beat three other really good guys,
two of whom were on the podium with him.

I may be "related" to Kubica

Seems that my maternal grandmother's mother was a Kubica. Not a real
common name, although not as uncommon as, say, Pyron is in the US. My
brother-in-law does geneology as a hobby (Carol is a member of the
Mayflower Society and my family goes back to the first landing at
Jamestown) and has volunteered to research this. But I suspect the
LDS doesn't have a whole lot of records on mid 19th century Eastern
Europe.

I'm completely with you, but I despair at what can be done about it, short
of us going through a painful phase of penalising every driver in a couple
of races (and if everyone gets a penalty, it evens out really!)

Physical means of ensuring drivers don't hop the curbs tend to get ruled out
on safety grounds.

The most ingenious solution I can think of is: each time a driver cuts a
curb in such a way, 1 second gets added to a penalty timer. Whenever the
driver pits, their penalty timer starts counting down, and they are not
permitted to leave until it has reached zero.
