you know, every generation has complained about the decline of
civilization - you can find quotes from Pliny the elder about this, you can
certainly amuse yourself reading about the evils of rock and roll, or the
evils of Mozart and how society will be in Hades soon.
What you are seeing is the reaction to change, not to decline. Just because
YOU (Nietzsche) or don't like it, doesn't mean that it is bad. Tehre is
some of this in the pro/anti vinyl arguements, and there is some truth on
both sides. Let's not confuse personal preference with the long term
destiny of humankind.

I need to upgrade/change the cartridge in my VPI 19 jr turntable.
I'll probably replace the aging moving magnet [it's a too long-ago
brand, I hesitate to name it] with a basic or middle- end Dynavector
or comparable brand. My venerable Macinstosh amp has been replaced by
the solid state Creek 5350SE. Any suggestions re cartridge
replacement?
More important: Because I've had difficulties with installing and
calibrating a cartridge, I want to find someone to do it -
incidentally, the head on the (Rega) arm is not detachable. I'm in
NYC and after years of experience am wary of dealers & their "service"
depts. Any suggestions re dealer or other service sources? [VPI of
course no longer produces or services the 19 jr.] Thanks for help.
Max.

A while back, there was a discussion about the hum that leaks in to stereo
gear from the TV cable. Several people mentioned a device that goes in
line with the TV cable to lift the ground, eliminating the hum.
Would some nice person please re-post the info on that device? The name of
it, where it can be obtained? (on-line or otherwise)
Many thanks in advance,
Greg.

I wouldn't be surprised if the optimum sound is achieved when nobody
is in the room. All those unwanted reflections and disruptions to the
sound waves.....

To some degree egg crates could perhaps be considered as Quadratic
Residue Sequence Diffusors, although I think that the wells are not
deep enough and the structure is too regular to have substantial
effects:

I have a pair of Allison 3 speakers, mounted, near the ceiling on two
corners of my living room. I believe they were bought in 1982. As
far as I can tell, they still sound fine for FM radio and my extensive
classical CD collection. I also still use the Electronic Subwoofer
that came with the speakers. The black material that covers one of
the bass speakers, mounted at the top, has deteriorated and some
pieces have dropped down. A grill covers the entire speaker so it is
not visible except when you take the grill off. I am wondering if
that black material has any function and is a repair possible or
needed.
Among currently available speakers, is there anything that would
replace my Allison 3s? That is, be suitable for corner wall mounting
and sound similar? Thanks in advance.

The cancellation of cross-fed acoustic signals that cloud directional
perceptions is not a new idea. It's just binaural sound done with speakers
and digital signal processing.
