Are Lectro MM400B Transmitters noisier than Um400?

Hi all,

I just got 2 new Lectro MMb Transmitters cause I work with wet weather
and wet people a lot. When I fired them up (with lectro 152 mics), I
had to turn the TX level control full up to get a normal level. This
also created quite a bit of a "pink noise"- like hiss. Both Tx's are
behaving the same.

When I used my um400 (setting the transmitter to the same gain
structure as the 4400B as shown by the meter LEDs) the hiss was much
quieter and of a different quality - more like white noise than pink.

I've been playing with this for a couple of hours and I can't find a
good reason for it. The compatibility mode is correct, the Noise
reduction is on normal, Frequencies are properly selected.

I even alternated the different transmitters going through the same
receiver on the same channel of my mixer and the nothing changed.

the only thing I can't swap are the mic capsules since the um and the
mm are wired differently - but i figure that it's unlikely that BOTH
of my new mic capsules are bad...

Let me explore this a bit. The newer M152's may be down on level.
Since the units are new I can play with units from stock here.

Hi Brent,
We didn't find anything here that should cause a problem. The M152 is
not designed to be a high output mic but with our M152WP's and with
the MM400C's at full gain, we very easily drove the system into
limiting. I had the mic at the middle of the chest in a normal
conversational level and easily got both red lights. We also tried
some noise "improvements" in the mic power supply that we have learned
since the MM series came out but we were able to make only miniscule
improvements on the order of a fraction of a dB. At this point, I
don't know what to do other than look at your units. I also could send
you a tested M152WP so you could compare it to the units you have.

Hi Larry,
Thanks so much for your time... I'm going to rewire one of my
countryman emw mics to the mini plug connector and try it - I have
another one that I'll leave with the five pin on. I'll be able to
test the 400b next to the um400, going into the same receiver and both
rigged with emws that have been field tested. If there's still a
difference I'll see if the dealer has another tx that I can try.

cheers,
Brent C

ps what's the difference between the 400b and c?
