Retrospective: THE HANDS OF ORLAC (1924)

Author: Mark Leeper

THE HANDS OF ORLAC (1924)
(a film review by Mark R. Leeper)

CAPSULE: One of the nearly forgotten films of the
German (actually in this case Austrian)
Expressionist period is the Conrad Veidt version
of THE HANDS OF ORLAC. This is a seminal horror
melodrama about a pianist whose hands are destroyed
in a train crash and are replaced by hands taken
from an executed murderer. The hands come to have
a life of their own. This film was remade as the
until-recently also rare MAD LOVE with Colin Clive
as Orlac and with one of Peter Lorre's juiciest
roles. This original version runs a little slowly
by modern standards, but it has one of the great
performances by the under-appreciated Conrad Veidt.
Rating: +2 (-4 to +4) or 7/10

easy to watch, Inside. A film about a woman terrorizing a pregnant
woman on Christmas Eve. Now in the midst of making Snow there next
horror film it they are in talks with Malek Akkad and it looks like we

Heroes and Miracles: Miracle at St. Anna
By Ray Morton
Whether you believe in miracles or not, some Divine intervention
brought James McBride’s celebrated novel to the attention of
celebrated filmmaker Spike Lee. Above writing a powerful screenplay,
or creating a beautiful piece of cinema, both men hoped to honor the
Buffalo Soldiers of the 92nd Infantry with their Miracle at St. Anna.
To accomplish this feat, McBride and Lee delved into World War II
history, Italian culture, and the firsthand accounts of black American
veterans.

  Script Tip: Strange Devices

STRANGE DEVICES
by William C. Martell

The difference between a good script and a great one is in the
details, and with Producers wading through 50,000 *new* spec scripts a
year, your script better be GREAT. The way to make your script jump to
the top of the pile is to give the audience something extra... A neat
idea or device they haven't seen before. Something to talk about,
after the film is over and the credits are rolling. Something that
makes your script unlike the other 49,999 in the pile. Something
special and unique.

  THE MAZE (1953)

Author: Lookingglass
Date: Sep 3, 2008 00:17

Has anyone seen this movie?

I never even heard of it until I recently read the entry for this film in
Bill Warrens great compendium about 1950's Sci-Fi movies, KEEP WATCHING THE
SKIES.

The movie was directed by the inimitable William Cameron Menzies...who had
also directed INVADERS FROM MARS that same year.

THE MAZE has the most bizarre premise of a story. I *googled* for a
commercial release to video, but only found an offer for a CD-R copy of the
film.

While the film was not greatly reviewed, I am very intrigued by this film,
and hope to enjoy it in a few days.

I trying to find a movie that I watched back in the 80's. I'm not sure
when it was made. But, the main character
snaps your neck with his bare hands and says the phrase "sun selle oom
sya otta" and a absorbs your life force making him indestuctable..

thanks
