[RANT] Dave's Other Media Rant - The Spirit (movie)

Dave's "Other Media" Rant Special: The Spirit movie

I decided I didn't want to wait to put this into next week's Capsules.
:) Think of this as an oversized capsule, I don't intend to go into plot
spoilers, although I may give away details that might count as spoilery by
stricter definitions.

Short form: I liked it. A little overwrought in a few places where that
was a bad thing (and very overwrought in places where it was called for), but
a fun movie. Very little actual gore and only brief nudity (Eva Mendez's
backside). Not really family-friendly, but it's practically cuddly for Frank
Miller's stuff.

And now for the longer form.

Dave's Unspoilt Capsules and Awards
The Week's Picks and Pans, plus Awards of Dubious Merit

Standard Disclaimers: Please set appropriate followups. Recommendation does
not factor in price. Not all books will have arrived in your area this week.
I am now on knitting junk mail lists. Rants, Capsules can be found on my
homepage, http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/Rants

"Other Media" Capsules:

Things that are comics-related but not necessarily comics
(i.e. comics-based movies like Iron Man or Hulk), or that aren't going to be
available via comic shops (like comic pack-ins with DVDs) will go in this
section when I have any to mention. They may not be as timely as comic
reviews, especially if I decide to review novels that take me a week or two
(or ten) to get around to.

This is our 273rd edition. Two books this week. After a quick
flip-through in the store, I decided to drop Young X-Men. They
didn't seem to have any X-Factor at my store, so that made my
decision for me.

This week we have...

Captain Britain and MI13 #5 - 3.25 Stars
Uncanny X-Men #502 - 3 Stars

Autumn colds, yay phlegm bombs. Rants, Capsules can be found on my
homepage, http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/Rants

First Look Comments:

Captain America #42: Marvel - After a year or so of decompression and
sometimes molassses-like pacing, the story wraps up at an almost Silver Age
clip (although with almost no real resolution...a small fish gets caught,
everyone else gets away in one way or another). All told, I'm glad I wasn't
paying money for this story. $2.99/$3.05Cn

Capsules:
Short, relatively spoiler-free reviews of books I actually bring home
(as opposed to reading in preview form in the shop or online). If I get a
book late due to distributor foulups or whatever, I'll put it in the Missing
section.

Books of Note (Strongly Recommended or otherwise worthy): The Incredible
Hercules #121

Transformers All Hail Megatron #3: IDW - A mix of humans trying to
survive and Decepticons trying to find a little bit of satisfaction in what
has turned out to be a very easy victory. Probably the...

rec.arts.comics.reviews (RACR) is a newsgroup for posting reviews of
comic books and comic-related materials, including conventions and
software. It can also be used for "comic journalism" and other such
topics that would be of interest in the same way as reviews of individual
books. RACR is a robo-moderated forum, controlled by a moderation 'bot
that automatically approves messages from a set whitelist of posters.

HOW TO POST
===========

(This section assumes that you already know how to post to Usenet
newsgroups in general.)

As RACR is a robomoderated forum, all messages must pass through the
moderation bot before they hit the network. Users are generally
"whitelisted" for the group - ie, individual users are given the right to
post by the moderator.
