Re: Doctor Who, on the subject of V4...

...Yes and no. Davies was reportedly dead set on never bringing the
Daleks back - which is why he had them killed off in the "Time War"
*before* Eccleston first showed up, but had to cave into doing that
one episode featuring the relic Dalek because of fan pressure. He
obviously learned his lesson from that one, considering how his
four-season run ended :-P

...But other than that, what other fan-induced effects are you
claiming have happened? Donna's departure, perhaps, as well as
Martha's - hey, let's face it, Rose is a hard act to follow, and Sarah
Jane has her own series now! - but what else?

I don't watch Doctor Who. However, as evinced by recent posts, I've
been lately thinking about the larger idea you raise, of how different
writers approach the work and the stylistic tools they use.

Retcons are an obvious and quantifiable example. Levitz's two runs on
the Legion totaled, what, eight or nine years, or about double that of
TMK's. Other than the (supremely elegant) Validus origin and Supergirl
as Brainy's motivation for time travel, I can't offhand think of a
single retcon from the Levitz years. Period. I'm sure other will now
respond with a half-dozen instances I'm forgetting, but my point would
still stand: Levitz certainly did not regularly use them as plot
points, and--with one major, involuntary exception--never as major
ones). Look at the major story arcs of his second run:

  Bits of Legionnaire Business

Author: Yeechang Lee

Random thoughts that spring to mind as I once again reread my complete
_Legion Archives_ collection:

* Has anyone ever connected Cosmic Boy becoming the Time Trapper with
the Hag (AKA Mysa Nal)'s painting in _Adventure_ #351 prophesying
his future fate, which Miss Terious (AKA Dream Girl) prevented Rokk
from seeing as it was "too dreadful"? The _Zero Hour_-related final
pre-reboot storyline I don't believe referred to this, which in
retrospect is somewhat surprising given its numerous references to
Legion history great and small. (Note, also, that while we do see
the paintings for Ferro Lad (accurately predicting his pending death
via the Sun-Eater) and Miss Terious, but beyond Cosmic Boy's
painting we also don't see Matter-Eater Lad's. I would hope it's not
"He becomes fat" or "He gets drafted into politics.")

* Best Legion retcons:

* Validus as Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad's child. Credit here, of
course, goes to both Levitz and to the letter writer who suggested
early on that the two Legionnaires' progeny would have mental...

Seeking modern take on first battle with Computo

Author: Yeechang Lee
Date: Jul 15, 2008 22:23

Being separated by a thousand miles from my pre-2000 Legion
collection, I am unable to look this up myself.

I have in mind a two-page spread--perhaps a front-and-back
cover--depicting the Legion's first battle with Computo as done by a
more recent artist, possibly Steve Lightle or Greg LeRocque. More
precisely, it shows the moment in _Adventure Comics_ #341 that Brainy
and the other free Legionnaires are about to fire their anti-matter
weapon at Computo.

I thought it was one of the covers for _Who's Who in the Legion of
Super-Heroes_ (1988); it's not, but may have appeared in one of the
issues. Anyone know the issue and can point to an online electronic
version?

Q: What was your *least* favorite Legion story?

Author: OM
Date: Jul 13, 2008 06:53

...Ok, let's look at the other end of the spectrum What, in your
opinion, was your least favorite Legion story you've ever read? Before
you answer, I'll make two quick points:

1) "least favorite" does not necessarily equal "worst". Some serial or
sequential works have particular segments that, while not of poor
quality, arguably do not measure up against the other segments....

Which Earth is each Legion from?

Author: WildCard
Date: Jul 8, 2008 09:07

As we all know by now, Final Crisis will contain a mini-series Legion
of Three Worlds. This is to define on which Earth each of the three
canonical Legions come from. So I am going to speculate:

Original Legion: Earth-1. This is where they were from originally,
and this is where they belong. There is one hitch to this: the New
Earth Superman was a part of this Legion. So I speculate that using a
Time Bubble also crosses universes and that can't be avoided.

Zero Hour Legion: New Earth. This is the same timeline that Impulse
comes from, and is too ingrained with current day New Earth history.
These Legionaires also spent a significant amount of time in current
day DCU, so it fits that they are the ones who's future goes along
with New Earth. Kon-El was also part of this Legion.

  Pro/Fan Trivia questions sought

Author: Tom Galloway
Date: Jul 7, 2008 16:42

This year's San Diego Pro/Fan Trivia will have Len Wein, Kurt Busiek, Mark
Waid, and Robert Skir going up against Tom Galloway, Terence Chua, David
Oakes, and John Sardegna, with the questions being asked by Peter
David. We're looking for people to write questions for it, with this year's
theme being "Young Heroes".

Specifically, we're looking for questions about characters college aged or
below, from stories published from 1956-1986 (essentially the Silver Age and
Pre-Crisis). For example, Superboy, Supergirl, the Legion of Super-Heroes,
Robin, Teen Titans, Spider-Man, Human Torch, the original X-Men and Kitty
Pryde, etc.. If you send in a Legion question, we request that you also
send in at least one non-Legion question for each Legion question, as we
don't want an excessively Legion dominated set of questions.

FAQ: Ads and Auctions on the Comics Newsgroups
Adapted from the REC.ARTS.COMICS/REC.ARTS.COMICS.MISC FAQ
Version 1.1--June 6, 2002

By Carl Henderson
Updated by Karl Hiller
Based on original FAQs by Francis Uy, Tom Galloway, Paul Estin, et al.

1: WHERE CAN I POST ADS, AUCTION ANNOUNCEMENTS, OR WANT-TO-BUY NOTICES IN THE
REC.ARTS.COMICS.HIERARCHY?

The only place for such posts is in rec.arts.comics.marketplace.
RAC.marketplace is a newsgroup created for the purpose of for buying and
selling comics and comic-related items.

In other words, RAC.marketplace is where your customers are. If you want to
reach them; post there. However, ads posted to other RAC newsgroups can only
serve to annoy potential customers--and you probably don't want to do that.

All other RAC newsgroups are discussion-only groups; "for sale," "want to
buy," and "for auction" posts are off-topic in those groups--and most likely
a violation of your ISP's subscriber agreement.

2: WHAT ARE SOME POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF NOT FOLLOWING THESE POSTING RULES?
