I've signed on to run the anime screening room at a new con that's
currently in the planning stages, target date of sometime in March or
April of '09.
I've never actually run an anime room on anything other than an ad-hoc
basis, and I really could use some advice on how to do it. In
particular, how do I put together a playlist? I've been kind of out
of the anime fanatic scene for a while so I'm not entirely sure what
people would *want* to see. I'm afraid my choice of shows would very
likely be largely in the 15-20 year old range, and I'm afraid that
might turn some people off.
I'm also looking for more general-purpose advice about how to go about
it, little things that aren't obvious but will trip you up if you
don't prepare for them, that kind of thing.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Oh you poor bastard. :-)

If you want to talk about it sometime we can get on the phone or Skype
or something. I did all the programming for AXNY and I've helped run
programming a couple of years at PMX. The hardest part you're going
have is permissions, it always is. Especially now with companies
going under and becoming harder to contact - like Geneon.

That would be great. I'm reachable via Skype or Google Talk, when I'm
home. It would be invaluable to be able to pick your brain.

Yeah, that was something I hadn't thought about. But it's definitely a
helpful idea. As soon as we get our name and date locked down I'll be
sending out some emails and letters to studios about that.

Yeah. I'll be asking about guests at the same time. :)

I pretty much always have GTalk running, so hit me sometime. I don't
keep Skype running all the time, but can fire it up.

No, what I mean is backup titles. Not multiple copies of the same
title. Some studio will promise to give you Title A. Then the con
happens and they go "Oops, we forgot that disc. Sorry!" Have Title B
available to replace Title A in the schedule. I'd usually try to get
at least a few 'backup' titles, just in case. Better prepared than
sorry.

Good points. Also, the farther from the wall it can be, the bigger
the picture will be.

Also a good point. But OTOH, only a few DVD players can show DivXes,
in case we can swing permission from Big West to show stuff like
Macross Frontier. And don't you need an external 5.1 decoder for
those? But even the cheapest mobos these days come with 5.1
integrated sound cards, and PowerDVD will even decode DTS.

Yes, if you can manage a projector, PLEASE make sure it is projecting
as high up as possible (ok, if there's a vaulted ceiling, not all the
way up). The folks trying to see the subtitles over the heads in
front of them will be thankful. It's shear misery to try to watch a
show with subtitles shown at chest height.
