HELLSING (TV series): Very loosely based on the manga by Kohta Hirno (only
three of the episodes actually pull from the manga the rest are 'filler')
this series shows the adventures of Great Britain's Hellsing division which
deals with paranormal. The core of Hellsing consists of Alucard, an
effective but sadistic and somewhat psychopathic vampire, his new
fledgeling Sera, who is terrified of loosing her humanity, and their
"Master", Integra Hellsing who Alucard wants to become a vampire like
himself. While the series does have a lot going for it (a gun totting
vampire, a butler who is as deadly as the vampire, challenges from the
Vatican's Section 13, and strong characterization through out) it suffers
from the fact the manga was still being written and a lot of filler
material was added. The series is best when it sticks to the manga and
seem to totally lose focus near the end. In fact, the ending is a major
let down as little is truly resolved and is totally at odds with the way
the manga storyline went.
PARENTAL ADVISORY: Extreme violence (blood, gore, torture, and Alucard
doing really scary stuff), profanity, and lots of sexual tension and
innuendo.
HELLSING Ultimate (OVA)
OVA series that follows the manga nearly in lockstep. In addition to
Hellsing, there is better fleshing out of Vatican's Section 13 and is
equally sadistic and psychopathic agent Father Alexander Anderson, and more
detail into Hellsing's enemy Millennium than in the TV series.
PARENTAL ADVISORY: Extreme violence (blood, gore, torture, decapitation,
impalement, cannibalism, bodies being blown up), and profanity.
Licenced by Geneon in North America until episode 3, now in search of a new
North America licencee.
