This idea came up while I was posing a 1:2500 Gamelon ship model
over an about-the-same-scale Space:1999 Moonbase Alpha model.
Looking at the Gemelon and thinking of the Yamato, and Captain
Harlock's Arcadia, and "It's all about the fins," I wondered if
Leiji Matsumoto wasn't influenced by Gerry Anderson's earlier
puppet shows with wildly finned vehicles: Supercar (1960-60),
Stingray (1963), Thunderbirds (1964-66).
I'm aware US cars of the time featured this styling, but did they
make it over to Japan? Or was it the Supermarionation
productions that made it so cool over there? I know the shows
are popular in Japan, with models and toys produced, but when
were they brought over?
