I was doing some offhand research and happened upon the interesting
fact that The Last Unicorn is going to be released in a new anamorphic
widescreen/5.1 Dolby Sound special edition for Region 1 as of Feb 6th,
2007. This will represent a significant improvement over the 2004
R1 release of the movie, which was full-frame and stereo.

The best price I've found yet on pre-ordering it is DeepDiscountDVD,
which has it for $12.38 with free shipping.

Any significant improvement in Peter Beagle getting the money that's
due to him?

I sure hope it'll be uncut. Heard the previous release was worthless
for some of it's edits and the only version I could live with was it's
German release a friend made a copy of for me, but it was one of those
films I watched WAY too much as a 6 year old.

Oh? Can you go into more details about what got cut out?
(I thought the soundtrack, script, production values, etc were superb, but
that the animation quality was rather poor. It *did* get made in the Dark Days
Of Western Animation, and does show... still, it's better than
Hannah-Barbera, and it gets the job done.)

Is it likely that it will never be released to Region 2?
Thanks

For me, it was the ability to playback those discs on my regular DVD
players as opposed to just using the PC. But it's the same thing,
doesn't matter much to me as long as I can watch it.

The Germans were very lucky to get that release early, and so for the
soundtrack recording that was never made available in the US, at least
someone had the balls to go and stick the tracks online for us to
download!

And yeah, it's kind of a shame that Granada International has been
rather moot on giving Peter S. Beagle his just due.

That's nothing a little fan-edit could fix. :-) (really, those guys
get too on the ball if it matters that much to make the film more the
way they feel it should've been presented)
