How come this guy can fill his page with screen captures and all I get

A movie plays to a different screen layer or "overlay" that's generated
by hardware-acceleration in the graphics-card, but a normal
screen-capture is from a layer which merely has a hole for the movie
window.

Try a different media player. Most have a built-in capture-to-jpeg
feature for single screen-captures.
